Jury summons received for next week, Tuesday.

Part of me wants to do my civic duty on a jury.

Another part of me fears the unspeakable horror of being on a jury for two weeks to render a judgement on a prick vs. a bitch physicians divorcing one another. A friend lived, miserably, through such an experience.

    I need advice.
How do I get the attorney's to say "No freaking way" to having me on a jury???

I considered an AR-15 t-shirt and tin foil hat but, these days, that would get me an unwelcome home visit from a governmental agency.

The last jury I served on was a case about a grandfather sexually abusing his granddaughter. It wasn't interesting, it was horrific. Two weeks ago, I got passed over on a trial over a road rage incident. Regardless, it's a privilege. Would you rather have a single non-omnicient judge deciding right or wrong?

The courts have heard it all...no longer can you go in, make outrageous statements, and expect to be dismissed.

Seems people love to bitch about the findings of the court, but are incredibly quick to avoid being in a position where they can directly inpact those decisions.

I wonder why the nation is in such turmoil.

Here’s the deal. Your worried about the sex of the baby before you’ve had the sex.

    Ok

How about my more honest acerbic side:

I've done a fair amount of legal consulting work.

I have a rather derisive attitude about the high-stakes poker game attorneys are playing?

    And that's me being sincere.

    ......................

    And my more empathetic self:
Were I the defendant I'd want an objective observer such as myself to me on my jury.

    .....................

    G'nite

While the evenings are still chilled I'm getting in the hot tub with the bride of 27 years.

Back when I was working it seemed like I got called up for jury duty every year or two. I always reported and was assigned to a trial twice, only to have it settled out of court, so I did not have to serve. The last time I was called up one of the questions they asked the jurors was if we thought we could be objective about a particular situation. I had strong negative feelings about it and even though I knew the court wanted to hear otherwise, I told them about my feelings and that I wasn't sure I could be objective due to a similar situation in my past. I was not selected for jury duty in that case and have never been called up for jury selection since then, even though I am now retired and could give the time much more easily. It seems so unusual that I wonder if I was put on some kind of black list or something?

In this county, you can register online. The computer will assign you to a particular trial and a date. (I think you can choose up to 2 weeks either side of the date on your notice.) Chances are very high that the particular trial that your are assigned to won't actually meet on that day. You receive a nice email thanking you and telling you not to show up. Works maybe 3 out of 4 times.

The alternative is to show up on the date shown. Then you are in a huge pool that will be used to select jurors for the cases that ARE being heard that day. Your chances of being picked at least for a pool is very high - at least 80%.

I thought being truthful about reading gun and hunting magazines, being an NRA member, etc. would keep me off of a jury. No such luck. Sometimes the defense wants someone who might piss off the left leaning members of the jury (or so I've been told.)

There have been some juries that I was happy to miss. One was a lawyer on trial for DUI. The court was filled with lawyers and every single word brought out an objection from somebody. The other was a trial for an alleged perv that molested a crippled girl in a wheelchair. It was so disgusting that nobody wanted to be picked.

Final thought: somebody mentioned showing up in a speedo. At one of the cases I was stuck in the pool (the DUI mentioned above), a guy dared to show up in shorts. The judge chewed him out for 20 minutes, then sent him home with a deputy to change. Then, she made him sit in a chair for the entire trial as punishment. DO NOT TRY WEARING INAPPROPRIATE CLOTHING!!
