There goes that old argument again, but the statistics just don't back it up. Let's look at it this way... How many cops are explicitly attacked for the sole purpose of stealing their gun from them? I just don't see it happening. In every case that I've heard about, when a criminal tries to take away the gun from a cop, it is because they are in a struggle with the cop because the cop was trying to arrest them.

If you are going to OC (or CC, for that matter), you need to be aware of your surroundings.

My experience has been that for the most part, people are just so involved in their own little world, that they don't notice if you are OCing.

When the temperature is 100F and the humidity is 90+%, it really is nice not to have to add an extra layer as a cover garment. I still keep a vest in the car so that I can toss it on in case I have to go into a store with a 30.07 sign (or an not legally binding improper 30.06 or gun-buster sign).
Agreed. I choose my carry choices on evidence rather than emotion.

If I need to go into a 30.07 location, I just untuck one side of my shirt to cover my pistol. If the Safariland AlS retention holster sticks out, I don't care. The pistol is not visible.

Still no reports of anyone being "shot first."

I carry my S&W M&P M2.0, 9mm, 5inch, openly in a Safariland ALS holster. I don't go to stupid places, with stupid people, at stupid times, to do stupid things. I've engaged law enforcement officers all over the Austin metroplex, including the Bastrop County DA, in pleasant conversion on many occasions. I've never been harassed or even asked for ID.

Having lived in Portland for 25 years I can tell you that's not a good area. There's a bunch of Section 8 apartments in the area.

I live in Rockport. After Hurricane Harvey I carried my 1911 open-carry style. Three things came from my experience:
    1. I got some strange looks from people
    2. Some of my neighbors still don't talk to me
    3. I felt pretty silly with a gun on my hip...concealed carry would have been much better.
(It turned out that looters were not a problem - contractors were ripping off people much worse!)

I lived in Tucson before returning to Texas. It was pretty common to see someone wearing a handgun in the Walmart. Not so much in the grocery store, so I guess you need protection in Walmart. Those that carried always stuck out. (And, they all seemed to have pretty cheap guns - what's with that?)

Will I open carry again - probably not. I'm a senior and planning to get the concealed permit...you never know when another hurricane will blow through.

    Michael

Michael, are you saying that you don't have a carry permit of any kind?

    Sigh. . . . . . . . I know! We just can't leave those large-mouth "opinionators" out of a discussion, no matter how we try.

Now, since the worm ean has been opened: "O C & C C are NOT mutually exclusive!" I ALWAYS CC, no matter what anyone can "see"!

Please stick to the topic, or go elsewhere.

If we'd stayed on topic, this thread would've withered & died 120 comments ago. It's all Fritz' fault for trolling us.

The cop argument has zero to do with Joe OC.

Lots of people have attacked cops and tried to take their gun. But its not relevant to our discussion. I'm talking about average Joe who just happens to have a gun on his hip.

Texas has had Open Carry for over two years, now. Carrying openly may be relatively new here, but Texas is the 45th state to enact some form of open carry. Many other states have had Open Carry for a lot longer than we have. No issues in those states, either. We all have to decide which risks we are willing to manage. I prefer to base my self defense decisions on facts and evidence rather than guesses and baseless supposition. If issues existed, the anti-gunners would be broadcasting them furiously, as evidenced by their trumpeting even the smallest lapse by lawful carriers and playing up tragedies to push their agenda.

I've carried openly in AZ, CO, KS, MO, NM, OK, and, of course, Texas. Before doing so, I've researched the local laws, news reports, and quizzed the locals on their forums. I have a relative in the El Paso County Sheriff Department (Colorado Springs, CO). I quizzed him at length when I first carried in CO. No issues.

Baseless supposition? Hardly. Every scenario in my mind is possible. Or maybe you don't frequent some of the places I do.

In regards to people being shot, then having their gun taken, there are almost no incidents. There are however many incidents of people taking OC guns from the owner and NOT shooting them. So I guess if you want to split hairs, there's that. You can argue situational awareness all day, but I can assure you those people felt they had their scene under control.

The situation that makes me not OC is where a guy comes into a restaurant or other venue and intends to rob it. He sees an OC and shoots him first before robbing it. No way to know how many times that has happened.

A Walther P22 (.22LR)? That's no different than being robbed of your cell phone. Hell, some cell phones are are even more expensive than that.

But, this is a bit different in that the robber already had a gun, so it's not the same as someone attacking someone just to get their gun.

Really? "Many?!?" Post a few of the news reports, as I don't recall that happening...

Again, show me concrete evidence that this ever been the case, as here is hard evidence to the contrary...

For the last time, speculation and claims that can be supported by facts are two completely separate things. The first are like assholes, everyone has one and most stink; the second is the acceptable way to support one side of a debate.

There's far too many of the first in this thread, and not enough of the second...

I think it does have something to do with it. The majority of the people you might see on a daily basis who are openly carrying a firearm are either police or armed security guards and they have been carrying openly all our lives. I have yet to see a news article that said that either of them were attacked solely for the purpose of gaining access to their guns. When cops claim that the suspect tried to get their gun, it's because they were already in some other of incident with the person such at arresting the person or questioning him prior to an arrest. The person resists arrest, a scuffle ensues, and in his panic, the suspect lays hands on the officer's firearm. Even if he didn't want to shoot the officer and just wanted to keep the officer from shooting him, these situations don't end well.

How many times do you hear of an officer just walking through a store or down the street and someone hitting them in the head and taking away their gun? Or how about coming up to the officer, shooting him for no other reason than to take away his gun? I suspect that it it was a common occurence, we would be hearing about it.

My experience has been positive with respect to OC. Most people don't notice and those that do are likely to start up a conversation about how they could get a CHL or what type of firearm I prefer to shoot / carry.

If I'm working around the house, I'll probably be carrying a Glock 20 since it's ugly plastic and any scratches that I get on it don't matter. Of course, one could say that Glocks should only be CCed since they are too butt-ugly to OC. :) If I'm not doing something where there's a significant chance for scratches, lately I'm more likely to carry my SAR K2-45.

So should we make preparations for when a bald eagle might swoop down and take our OC handgun?

Because, you know, there’s no way to know how many times this has happened.

If the scenario you mentioned has happened, there would be evidence/news reporting of it.

The sheer lack of evidence tells me all I need to know.

My wife and I were eating at a Chinese restaurant in the Chinatown area of Houston (near Bellaire and Beltway 8) late one evening. I had picked her up from the airport and was not expecting to be going out to eat, so I was OCing and did not bring my vest as a covering garment. The place she selected did not have a 30.07 sign in the door. There were 3 or 4 officers sitting at a table that we walked by and sat down next to. Even at that hour, the place was busy and it was the only open table. I think at least 2 of them might have been working security for the shopping center since I saw them later on in the UTV that security drives around the shopping center. While in the restaurant, one of the officers (an Asian) stopped by our table when coming back from paying his bill and struck up a conversation, asking me how long I had been OCing and my general impression of the reactions of people or whether they even noticed. In the end, he even thanked me for carrying and said that he wished that more people would OC. Maybe he wasn't a typical cop in that he appeared to be a true 2nd Amendment supporter.

The first 2 are the same incident and the last 2 are the same incident.

And one could argue that in the last incident, anyone who is stupid enough to open carry in their back pocket like that deserves to win the stupid prize. If he had just had a cell phone sticking out his back pocket, that would have probably been stolen.
