Does anyone have an opinion on the Taurus 9mm? The good, bad, and ugly are all welcome. I know most people here probably prefer the higher end guns but I really like the safety features on this gun due to my son. The thing that concerns me are reviews on case cracking and jams. Apparently, the case cracking was fixed with the "pro" model, but I don't want to buy a gun that has a higher potential to jam. If I'm ever in a bind and NEED to use it, it would stink having the thing lock up.

I shot the Springfield XD9 and enjoyed it, but I had trouble pulling the slide back. Are they all that stiff or am I just a wimp? Thanks in advance for any advice.

HK USP Compact in 9mm is a very similar gun, and has a unique trigger lock on the gun. You use a small key that they give you to rotate the lock inside the magazine well. The lock prevents the mainspring from compressing which essentially boils down to locking the slide and hammer into position. The gun cannot be fired in this position, and certainly would never be remedied by a child or someone unfamiliar with firearms.

What I tell people is that you really can't take into account money, especially when you are talking a couple hundred bucks. Your life, your child's life, and the life of your family are worth more than a couple hundred bucks.

You want the most ergonomic, most reliable, and safest firearm that you can afford. Anything else is not worth owning.

Thanks for the info on the HK. My husband just got a HK .40 and it has the thumb safety and the locking mechanism. I was talking to him after I made that post and I think I'll start looking for a HK 9mm. A little less money is definitely not worth any life and I want to be as safe and responsible as possible.

My buddy had an older Taurus 9mm Millennium. It was a really good gun and never missed a beat. he trigger was super long and heavy, but if you could put up with that it was a good gun.

Cool deal, the HK Compact models have the same features as your husbands .40 USP Full-Size, but is a bit more ergonomic for female shooters.

The XD is that stiff but any half way decent instructor could show you a way to rack the slide in less than 2 minutes to where you would not have any problems at all.

The Taurus is a fine gun, but as with any new gun, put it through its paces before you trust it with your family's life. I have seen dud Taurus guns and I have seen Kimber and H&K throw a lemon everyonce in a while.

Taurus has a lifetime repair or replace guarantee.

Good luck and remember to always train. A skill unused is a skill lost.

Sorry, I forgot to specify. The Taurus Millenium 111PTi

I have a 1st generation Millennium PT-111Ti 9mm with night sights. I have never had any jamming issues with it. I did have to tweak [file] the trigger a little. Today, it is in my warehouse with a broken disassembly pin.....I need to call Taurus and have them send me one. Overall, I would not recommend the 1st generation PT-111 for concealed carry, and I think the titanium slide one was only made in 1st generation (that is what the Ti stands for). That particular unit is also probably DAO, which you may or may not like. I have completely stripped mine and polished and tweaked it. I don't mean a standard field strip, I mean that I took it completely apart, including the slide. Mine is great, besides my needing a new pin, but I only did that because I wanted it to have a decent trigger and smoother action. I am sure you don't want to do that.

As far as self-defense, I have HK's and carry them when possible. You {read: I} can't always carry an HK, depending on your clothing. They are great and I highly recommend them.

I would like to note that we do have a 3rd generation Millennium in the house. It is the pink and stainless one from Gander Mtn. My wife loves it and we have not had a single issue with it. She enjoys shooting it, she loves that the frame is pink, and she has not had a single hiccup with it. If you go with the Millennium, go with a gen 3 if possible.
