We’re on a wooded acre, no ticks in the year I’ve been here.

But damn if the mosquitoes don’t like my sweet, sweet blood.

We can have folks over, no one gets bit except for me, the guy with half a dozen welt-sized bites.

I used to go hunting with a guy like that, he would spray himself down with Off and still be eaten alive, I may have one bite.

I believe it is due to fire ants.
Way back when where we lived in Comal county tick and chiggers were common. So were quail.
    Very unusual now.

I totally believe fire ants are responsible for a decline in quail populations. Not only that, but I suspect they are damaging the toad population, as well as any underground hibernating species.

Not sure that the ticks and the chegros didn't just take each other out in their long standing gang war.

.... I do know that areas that have gotten Raspberry Crazy Ants are quickly losing fire ants. I talked to a scientist at A&M about the Crazy Ants when we were having an issue at work. ....

I've read about the crazy ants. Living out in the country with a well, I'll take the fireants over the crazy ants and repeatedly not having water in the house. Seems like I read that when they die, they send out a signal that attracts all their buddies, so the swarm just makes it impossible to control with typical methods.

I spend a lot of time clearing land and have not had a tick in 8 years, nor have my dogs. But when I was young ticks were common on me. Heck one time I got one in the head of my Richard and I drowned it in diesel fuel since I did not have anything to remove it.
Yup. Felt one onetime crawling on the sack. Got lucky.

Guess I was lucky then because I stood there for a good while with the head of my Richard hung over in a cup full of diesel. Finally it started to back out of the hole it was in and I picked him off. NOT FUN!

Tons of ticks at the in-laws property in Edwards county. I've got chiggers at my place in Milam county, but haven't seen ticks. I've found that tucking my pants into my boots and spraying the boots with off is enough to keep them both away from me.

That's what we did "back in the day".

There has been a correlation between fire ants and reduced tick populations. Can't recall now who did the study. Of course correlation is not the same as causality, but the correlation was pretty strong.

It's a daily process to take an evening shower and then stand in front of the mirror for a self inspection. I'm not bragging when I'm doing that!

You can rationalize it by repeating “I’m a grower, not a show-er”

I've seen a bunch of fireflies this year already. Seemed they only showed up in June before, or maybe I am misremembering.

And I can tell you that Red River County is loaded with ticks.

We have fireflies at our house. Anecdotal, but I got rid of all the fireants when we moved in a few years ago. Honestly I'm surprised the ducks haven't wiped out the fireflies like all the other insects in the yard. They must taste really bad.

They (ducks) sleep at night. They are also very self conscious, and are embarrassed by glowing poop.;)

Yeah, but the fireflies sleep during the day. Normally they do that on the ground or low plants, but these must be doing it in the trees out of the duck's reach.
