Law enforcement doesn't protect the public. They enforce law. If you're not the one getting arrested. There's a perception of protection.

    Absolutely no duty involved.

And it's a sad thing too. The public has so many laws that hurt us in order to protect ourselfs and train ourselfs. What we can have, when we can do it, what we can use, that's not ok blah blah blah. It's all micromanaged laws. If police have this attitude, we are already in dangerous territory. If police don't want to help protect myself or my property, then don't tell me how I'm wrong in doing it myself. Lol.

So you believe that every LEO that goes into becoming one believing that?

From the clinical standpoint. Police evolved from industrial security guards.

From my perspective being in the car. You may start police thinking you protect something. Then that idea is dashed. You enforce law. You do it without bias or feelings. Cops can't be sued because you got shot, cut, kicked, or beat.

I'm not saying that all LEO's follow that, but I believe your view is a bit skewed. Certainly they are there to uphold the law, but handing out traffic tickets and looking for bad guys isn't all they do.

What else do you believe they do? Department's have a public relations officer. You usually see them on the news. I never handed candy to children. I didn't help old ladies cross the street. Didn't change somebody's flat tire. My FTO chewed my butt because I waved at somebody.

I smiled a lot. Kept the uniform ironed. Boots clean. I enforced law by the rules. My view was skewed. I watched too much Mayberry as a child. There no such thing in real life.

I think that's a shame. You can still be on guard with a smile. You can still go from talking to a rear naked choke with a smile. Lol. I don't see the issue.

We were patrolling some notorious low income housing. I waved to a few people in a group.

With a Police authority verbal announcement. "We Don't do that". Type of single sentence you get the jist from pretty quick. Cool guy personally. In cop mode(what the public sees) he was straight hard core. Didn't take an excuse to save your life.

It's true. Everything is a nail when you're a hammer.

I looked up to my uncle as a Seattle policeman, long retired now. He had been decorated twice for being a hero by the community. He didn't get that from giving out tickets and beating up the bad guy, which I'm sure he did. Protection comes in many forms, even a presence can do that. I'm not foolish enough to believe that the police will protect me from all things bad, but I feel sad for you in that you make it sound that as a teacher I do more for my community then you believe you had.

I maintained society order. It's me that allows you teachers to arrive at work by not speeding. It's me that makes sure you paid the taxes on your ride. That you ain't drunk or stole something.

When you get off work. Ill still be there making sure you don't speed. Holidays too.

Don't hate me because I'm tax funded awesomeness.

If that's your main reason for being cop, that's a pity.

Main reason. Honor in myself and the world around me. I kept the super predators off your back. I've given CPR to an inmate that hung himself. I've dealt with the trash so you didn't have to.

You may call me Hero. Mr Teach.

You're a guard then? And what you just said sounds like protection.

And for your information, I consider all good cops heroes. Anyone that is willing to put their lives on the line in the name of public safety is a hero in my book.

I'm opposed to this for a variety of reasons. We don't need more federal laws, state laws are sufficient to deal with this issue (and they already do for the most part). This also seems like another major abuse of the interstate commerce clause, and IMO could potentially violate a person's natural right to self defense in some situations.

There have been cases where police have made up an assault allegation (Olmos Park, TX for example) if the Feds get involved in this that would be another layer of government an individual would have to defend themselves from legally.
Agreed. And this is one step closer to what Obama wanted to do; make state and local police part of the federal government. I have seen countries where the police are handled on a federal level. It is not a good thing.

And remember this: When the shit REALLY hits the fan, these are the FIRST folks who will be knocking down your door at 3 a.m. in the morning to forcibly remove your GUNS! It won't be the military until much later. I don't think cops should have any more legal protection than any run of the mill average citizen should have! This proposal is bullshit!
