I eat them when I find them. Got them ALL over my place, but not enough rain to ever see them go ripe. My fav is the Muscadine grape, love those thick skins...

I've picked many 5 gallon buckets of them. Ex father in law would make wine with them. Otherwise it's a snot looking glob squeezed out a purple ball.

We'd pick the grapes (which makes your hands feel like they've been bitten by piss ants).

He'd pour a layer of grapes in an old ice chest. Layer of sugar and a layer of grapes. Once the ice chest was filled up. He'd smash them down using a 2x4 nailed into a 'T'.

Once they were smashed. He'd drain the liquid and poured it into a 5 gallon glass water carboy. Stuck a cork in the top. The cork had a plastic hose that was vented into a mason jar full of water.

He'd let it sit for about 3 months outside under a shed with the lawnmower.

Mustang grape wine will put hair on your chest...

Saw an article in the Star Telegram back in the 60's for mesquite bean jelly. Got a recipe?

I made a batch years ago while living in Fort Stockton. From what I remember, it's a regular old jelly receipt. Like grape jelly. You prepare the seed pods like you would the grapes. Add pectin and can the jars. It comes out looking like light colored honey. Definitely a particular taste you can't get with anything else. Wonderful flavor.

Other then jelly. I'd throw the pods on the grill for smoke. They'd give a sweeter mesquite flavor and smoked like hell.

Then use the mesquite beans. If you haven't tasted one. Grab a pod and snap it in half. Taste the juice. They have a flavor like a mild honey. Use those. The jelly is amazing too.

I hated those trees growing up.
We had several in our front and back yards.
Spent many a day raking up mesquite beans.
And the thorns, always had to be careful walking around them.
    My horse liked them.
