There's a ton of individual threads on BBQ joints. Thought I'd start one as a central place to review BBQ joints. The only thing I ask is name the place and give some sort of address.

In the Kinda new BBQ place thread, majormadmax recommended I try Fritze's in Boerne, and I said would the next time I visited my barber who's across the street from Fritze's. Well, today I got my haircut and went across the street to Fritze's, where they have two standing daily speccials, and a rotating special. Today's rotation was a 2-meat plate with 2 sides and a drink for $10. Seemed like a good deal, so I ordered up sliced beef and jalapeno sausage with beans and potato salad.

Decent servings all around, sauce is delivered on the side as it should be. POJ and your choice of white or wheat bread is included. Time to dig in.

Beef. It's what's for dinner. Or lunch, in this case. The beef was okay, probably been in the warmer a little too long. Thin smoke rings, light bark, salt/pepper seasoning that wasn't overpowering. Tasted like beef should, light smoke flavor. Sauce was a spicy vinegar base; I liked it, but the sauce overpowered the beef.

Sausage. The jalapeno sausage was....good. I prefer hot gut (natural casing), but this wasn't it. The mix seemed to be a heavy beef/pork/chopped jalapeno which I found to be good. The sausage was what I consider as loose or mealy, which can indicate a lack of fillers and/or too much time in the warmer.

    Sides. Nothing special here.

While it sounds underwhelming, my expectations for a $10 2-meat plate were met, so I'd definitely go back.

Been eating there for 8 years I have been living in Boerne and your review is a good summary. Were I to give it stars it would be 3+ out of 5 and the + comes from the good value for the money.

The fairly new Blackboard BBQ in Sisterdale (Boerne) gets great reviews:

    https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/black-board-bar-b-q-2018/

    https://www.yelp.com/biz/black-board-bar-b-q-no-title

Good Q is definitely subjective. I don't like the type my wife likes for example,

    Jack Spratt.
Have not been to Blackboard yet, but tried the previous 'Maywalds' several times (its closed now) and my bet is it closed due to HIGH prices and MEAGER portions. It was just don't go hungry at all. Wife and I both stopped going as we got tired of packing a lunch to go eat lunch at the place.

I do know the Blackboard charges $20 per pound for burnt ends...HEY FOLKS been eatin Texas Q for nearly 70 years and have NEVER paid a dime for burnt ends...

$20 bucks a lb is TOP dollar for Q, very few places can command that kind of money for Brisket that runs less than $2 bucks a lb wholesale...got burnt on this far to many times, so now I order a sandwich and eat it before I order up take out at $20 per lbs especially after giving my dogs the better part of a $55 order of nothing but meats for a 'TOP rated' joint. In fact it was so bad that after a couple of bites of the beef, sausage and ribs, we fed it to the dogs and went out to eat.

Concur with Fritze's, not the greatest BBQ, but decent enough and good value for the money.

The now-closed Texas Meat Company was our "go to" BBQ place in Boerne, the food was better but it was also much more expensive.

The one thing I do have to add is that the staff is very friendly there! My wife gets very indecisive when we go to new restaurants like this, and they let her try several items to help her make up her mind. I really appreciated that.

My addition to this list will be B-Daddy's BBQ in Helotes (14436 Bandera Rd, Helotes, TX 78023; in the Old Town, http://www.bdaddysbbq.com/). We've been a few times and it is pretty similar to Texas Meat Company, more flavorful but also more expensive than your average BBQ joint.

Honestly, I use Rudy's as the standard by which I compare local BBQ places to. Not that Rudy's is great, it's just pretty good and just slightly expensive. B-Daddy's has better items, but they tend to "overdo" them in my book in that they add too much to them instead of letting the customer decide what they want (i.e. their Vinegar Slaw is "carrots and green cabbage come together with a sweet and savory red wine vinaigrette sauce and course ground black pepper"). Maybe I just prefer the basics, but I am not a fan of gourmet fanfare. B-Daddy's was originally a food truck, so I understand they're desire to "stand out;" but for the actual restaurant I would rather add my own desired spices and seasonings.

In comparison, Smokey Mo's (multiple locations, but the closest to us is at 7915 W. Loop 1604 N., San Antonio, 78251; http://www.smokeymosbbq.com) is in between Bill Miller's (which I avoid) and Rudy's. It's more basic BBQ, and not bad but not great. I first ate at one in Spring Branch one day when I was out and about in the Jeep, it smelled good when I drove by so I decided to stop. It's someplace I would eat at again (and we have), but I won't make a special trip to go there. But I wouldn't avoid the place either.

    Cheers! M2

Concur, except I have not eat at Smokey Mo's. It's a chain and have never had great Q at a chain. In fact the more stores they open is a direct correlation to the poorer the quality of the food. I have noticed that what happens is that the folks doing the cooking and serving keep getting younger and younger the more outlets they have.

Yep, I noticed another one going up at 410 and Military near Lackland. Again, it's average BBQ but still far better than Bill Miller's, which I detest. The only good thing at that place is their sweet tea!

    Heaven...

Call to order ahead or go at an odd time (at the risk they’ve run out of everything), nothing is worth a 2-4 hour wait.

Looks like the hours are pretty strange for a restaurant.
    Saturday closes at 5pm.
All other days they close at 6pm.

For BBQ Tejas opens at 11 AM till they sell out, usually by 3 PM or so. Seems to be the thing with great BBQ joints these days, get there early and wait in line. Not for this guy. I've had good luck showing up around 1 PM on weekdays, short line and they usually aren't sold out of anything yet. All bets are off for Saturdays, especially if the weather is nice.

What about coopers I keep hearing about in llano?
Is that the same coopers that was in round round many moons ago?
There are Coopers all over the place, don't know if they are linked or what. I have eaten at several and they were all middlin at best except the one in Llano, but its been a while since I ate there so cannot give an update on that one.

Coopers in Llano? Same place as always, but I haven’t eaten there since probably 2012 when I was at Ft Hood.

Not sure if the other locations are company stores or franchise. I’ve never heard a bad thing about the original and I’ve never had a bad experience there.
