Anyone can show up to a pawn shop with something valuable and walk out the door with cash. Pawn shops don’t check credit scores since the loans are collateralized, they keep long hours, and are convenient source of cash for 30 million Americans every year.

In the 19th century, Americans found their lender of last resort by looking for the industry’s “barbershop pole”: 3 dangling golden spheres. Like the rest of retail, that’s changing fast. Widespread smartphone adoption has given working-class Americans access to high speed internet. This sudden digitization lets us answer a question that’s baffled historians and stymied regulators: when Americans need cash, what do they actually pawn?

Never pawned anything & never bought anything from a pawn shop. I pretty much look @ them as a scumbag industry. And sure I've been inside Tomball Pawn.

When I lived in Portland I had a really good relationship with a local pawn shop. I purchased a couple dozen firearms there over the years. They knew what I wanted and like and would call me when something went up for sale. There were several times I'd stop in and look at something and they would let me know they couldn't deal on that item. Most of the time I was paying 60-70% of the listed price.

I've never pawned anything, but I've bought a bunch of stuff in pawn shops. Usually 50-70% off the marked retail price.

My brother in law was a notorius pawner. Always needed cash, always selling something, sometimes something he borrowed. I remember him selling the spare tire out of my dad's car once. That was pretty entertaining.

I believe the stats. I buy an occasional something something from the pawn. My purchases pale into comparison to how many....lol...Designer purses the GF buys. Coach is the name to get. At least that's what draws the women. Her and her daughter carry pawn handbags.

There's not a pawn in Killeen Texas that doesn't have name brand purses. Not a few here and there. Piles of them behind glass.

Cowboy boots are another common item. Collectable Nike basketball shoes. Leather coats also.

Never pawned but got a nice '65 Rem 700 in 30-06 a couple of years ago. Figure some kid got his grandfather's rifle and didn't want it so it was pawned. The trigger on that thing is amazing. One of these days I'll check out the local ones.

A big thing about pawn. Is you can finance a gun. They call it lay-a-way.

Want that rifle that's $600+? Put it on layaway and make payments.

Done that too. Couldn't afford it in one big bunch but I could afford it making payments. Remmy BDL short action in 308.

Biggest problem with those "named" items is that in some cases they are counterfeit...

If you want deals than look for police asset seizure auctions. You wouldn't believe the stuff that shows up at the San Antonio ones!
