I need some help picking a .22lr (full:laughing:) semi auto handgun.
I've been wanting one for a while now, for plinking. I've seen guns that I can get kinda on the higher end, but the magazines are cheaper, or I can get a cheaper gun with magazines that cost more.

I usually buy my guns from academy for the most part... They have a ruger mk IV target and a S&W Sw22 From $300-$450~ The ruger has slightly cheaper magazines. The grip on both of these guns was pretty amazing, but I just didn't quite like the sights on them. (Black iron sight) Then on the internet I can find things like a ATI Firefly and a Sig Mosquito S&W M&P 22.

Does anyone have any experience with these guns or some .22lr handgun alternatives, of a similar price? I would also like to have a total of 3-6~ magazines without breaking the bank.

    Thanks,

I’ve got an M&P22 full size. Fun gun, it’s a pretty exact match ergonomically for a full size M&P. Mine came with 2 mags NIB, took a while for extra mags to get out in quantity. Mag capacity is 12 rounds.

It’ll plink, but don’t think it’s a target plinker at 25 yds. Sights could be better, trigger feel is completely different than a striker-fired M&P.

Like a bunch of the replica .22s, it’s manufactured by either Walter or Umarex (owns Walther) in Germany to design and specs provided by the label it’s sold under.

Ok so...I was told the sr22 was solid. Once I got mine I put 300 the first day. Now its close to 1k. Not a single failer. I'm a believer in these. Accuracy is fair. I will finally be moved and in Texas in September. If you're near Euless or Palmer just pm me you can try mine out.

Got a Buckmark, love it. It feels good in my hand.

Got a S&W 422 and a 422-(something) w a long barrel. Full size with rail. Both are great shooters. Taught all my kids SA shooting with the 422.

You need to hold them all and see what feels good.

Mosquito has a history of Mag issues and was too small for my taste. Did feel right. Same on a couple small ones.

Have wanted a Beretta NEOS. Just keep talking myself out if it.

Great comment on the reliability of the gun.

" I would rate the GSG-1911’s reliability as perfectly adequate."

I've never fired one, I just found it amusing.

Nobody does 22lr like Ruger does at this point. I got the SR22 because it was a small enough grip that my boy could shoot it (10 at the time). The 8 year old can't quite get his hands around it yet but I know it'll be his first handgun to shoot. I stayed away from the Walther p22 because of the many FTF issues with anything but the best ammo. The SR22 can fire everything and can be purchased with a threaded barrel if you're into that. You can get one of those MarkIV or other competition/target type models if you don't need the small grip. I didn't like the M&P22 and saw no point in it unless you want to get a gun exactly like your M&P9 but I didn't like that gun either :)

My three choices are the M&P 22 compact, Ruger SR 22, and Ruger Mark IV. The first two are designed more like a carry gun. Not that they are carry guns. The Mark IV is more of a target, plinking, hunting style. So it just depends on what you want out of a 22 handgun; Something that more closely simulates your carry piece, or something just for fun and plinking. If you plan to do some competitive target shooting, the Mark IV all the way.

Man those Mark IVs and my Mark III are like laser guided computer weapons. I can nail a spent shotgun casing from 25 yards easy. Me and Shotgun Jeremy were doing it last year at Shiny Top when they still had their ranges.

When my wife was shopping she(we) looked at the S&W. It was cheap enough but just felt cheap. It looked like the lower was pot metal and we passed. Bought the SR22 and she loves it.

    There's a difference between the M&P 22 and the 422. 422 is a better gun IMO.
