The optics forum here has relatively old info and doesn't get visited much but if this gets moved over there then so be it. I am looking for a red dot and have limited my choices now to the Primary Arms Advanced 2, Sig Romeo 5, Holosun Paralow 503 and Vortex SPARC II or Spitfire. I am not going to spend more than these. If I can get it in FDE, even better. Vortex might be the only one not in FDE. It will mount to a Ruger AR556 that is crazy accurate and tight groups with iron sights. This is just for fun basically. Has anyone bought one recently?

The only thing that scares me about the Sig Romeo 5 is that I may be tempted at some point to pick up a Juliet 4 magnifier to go with it :)

Vortex or the Sig gets my vote.
If your trying to keep cost down the Bushnell TRS25 is a pretty good deal, the the price of the Romeo 5 @ PSA is a good deal...almost got one the other day

Vortex Sparc II has my vote. I don’t think you can get better at twice the price.
Holosun has NOT earned my respect yet. It appears to be a rebranded cheap Chinese knockoff. Please correct me if I am wrong. YMMV...

    Have you used a Holosun?
I have not used a Holosun. However I have fondled many of them with the intention of buying one. The construction and quality did not meet my expectation.

It appears that many low end red dots are produced by one company and rebranded by many. That is not necessarily a bad thing, depending on the money you are willing to spend, and your needs.

    I own a Vortex. I have used a Holosun and a Sig.
I have not used the PA.
I also have a HiLux micromax B that I love.
I probably like the Holosun the best.
As far as construction, they all hold up for what I do with them, but I’m not a hi-speed operator.

I do own a low end Sig, and I have used it with good results. It was removed to mount a Trijicon MRO that was on sale.
Am I a red dot snob? Maybe.

I found the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24 on sale last Black Friday ($275.00 with mount). I replaced a red dot with one on my Sig MPX SBR. It ended up being a perfect fit for a PCC. A red dot picture with magnification when desired.

I am not against Holosun. If it works for you, then use it. As with many things, when you pick something up, you get a feeling of the build quality. Holosun did not meet mine.

Whatever you buy, please skip the Sun branded stuff. It looked awesome, but was absolute crap in use. That is probably what soured me to the lowest cost solution.

    (Sorry wrong scope first time)

I had a Sig Romeo 4c before. I had gotten a PS90 again in the summer of 2016, and I thought the the on/off feature on the Romeo was pretty cool. And, I loved the reticle. Reminded me a bit of the Eotech....

First, it had bad reflections off the red coating on the glass.. I hated it. I had it all the time. It was basically caused whenever there was light behind me (reflecting off the red coating on the glass or reflections in the tube). It also had an odd shape that kept changing. Then, I finally figured out that is was the light coming past the side/back of my head, when I had the gun shouldered. So, depending on how I held the gun, the red splotch would change.

Even outside, I got it. Didn't matter if the sun was up above in the sky, and not behind me. It happened ALL the time. I called Sig - I was told that it depended on the specific specimen I had - some suffered from reflections off this coating more than other ones did....

Also, the damn mounting screw snapped when I used the smaller (included) mount to put it on my PS90. Now, I have bought tons of cheap scope rings over the years - I used them to secure flashlights to carbines. I NEVER had a mounting screw snap like that. I ha dnot even tightened it very much...

I ended up returning the optic and bought an Aimpoint Micro H1. After all that mess, I decided to just get something I could trust and be done with it...

I too think Vortex a great choice, no matter the model.

Yes, I own one, but I also have some cheapies. One on an RWS, single shot crank, 1000 fps .177 cal pellet rifle.

I was advised I need an optic especially designed for a pellet rifle.

It isn't, but is holding up quite well.

    Optics are a snobs delight.

I can afford high end, but just can't justify what the holy grail of optics demand in cost. You know the two...

Vortex is as high in cost as I care to go and they do quite well...

I won't pay more for optics than the firearm costs as some do.

You can get n Aimpoint PRO in the $300 price range. “Optics Snobs”? Little over the top imho. When it comes to optics you definitely get what you pay for.

I’ve had some Vortex I’ve been pleased with and others I haven’t been. I’ve never regretted an Aimpoint, but my primary was on my patrol rifle and I teach with the same rifle.

Not everyone expects the same performance nor will use them in the same environments etc.
