I have a new 6.5 CM bolt action rifle. I have the opportunity to hunt a large ranch in West Texas. I want a scope for 500 yard shooting. I would never feel comfortable letting one fly longer that that, but that's just me. I would like to be able to easily dial in W&E. I also am not dropping 3 grand on a scope. Let's think bang for the buck...value! All helpful comments appreciated.

I'm in the same boat. I have recently purchased a Ruger American in 6.5cm.
I put a Vortex diamondback Tactical 4x12 ...it barely gets me to 200yards. Since i turned 40 a few years ago the vision has started to go. I'm wanting to upgrade ... thinking of going with the Vortex Cross Fire II 6x24 its in the $300 range, there is also the Viper 6x24 in the $550 range. One of those will be my next purchase...just have to decide if the Viper is worth the extra $200.

My crossfire II 6-24 has a useable magnification of about 20×.
Anything over that and it's just not clear.
500 to 700 yds is pretty easy with decent glass at 10 to 14 power. I know it's easier to say than to prove, but it's been my experience.

I don't know where you are going in W Tex, but I have friend that hunts there regular and if you are planning on 500m game will see you before you see it. That is some very challenging hunting as there really are no trees or anything else. The win goes to those with a laser range finder. That is a 500m++ world out there.

I would look HARD AT these and they are on sale, well under $1k. Friend of mine ordered one and if I talk with him and he has got it and hunted it I will post what he says. I know if very well and he would not bothered to order unless he had a comfort zone with it.

Younggun hit a target at 1600 yards with a 10X SWFA scope. It's the glass, not the magnification.

The SS or HD version...there's a $400 difference between the 2. My diamond back 4×12 is in the same $300 range as the SS...I'm not sure how young Younggun is but my eyes just aren't what they used to be. Back in my 20's I could use a 3×9 cheap $40 Simmons & see my .22 hits @100yrds. on a normal range target. Now that I'm 43 & can barely see my 6.5 cm @ 200yrds with 4x12 $300 scope.

It was the cheaper version. You may not be able to see holes in paper at distance but making out targets and holding for wind is easy enough.

What I have heard is buy as much scope as you can afford. At least as much as the rifle cost. $1000 rifle = $1000 scope. Look at it this way if you tire of the rifle and get something else the scope can be moved. I have a Vortex 6-25 30mm tube 50 mm objective on my 6.5. It is a good match. I can see bullet holes better with it than a 20-60 spotting scope. It's just that much clearer. A 2" disc in easily visible at 500 yds. Also look for a FFP scope. My 2 cents worth.

That's not a problem @ 200 with the DB 4x12..I can see the target no problem, just the holes are tougher to see. With splatter tagets no problems at all. I'm sure it could go out farther and make out target & hold for wind just haven't had the chance to take it past 200yrds.

If you want to dial W&E easy.... I'd go this route. https://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes/eliminator-iii-laserscope All in one unit.

-500 yrds is cake work with the 6.5c

About $1500. He said he's not dropping 3 grand on a scope... so I thought $1500 wasn't bad;)
I also didn't know if he had a range finder. Because he's going to need that also...
Did you check out those ATN's in the link I posted? WOW under a $1000, rangefinders and lot of stuff for you money, I might pick one up myself.
