I moved back here from Mississippi in May. I was in Mississippi for around 8 years and for 6 1/2 of those I served in the Mississippi State Guard. Resigned my commission as a Captain and Company CO when I moved here.

I'm thinking about the TXSG once I get a bit more settled in... I can tell that it's appreciably more advanced than we were in MS. My MOS was 31A.

Just thought I'd see if there's any Guardsmen in the forum.

I've looked into but don't really have the time. Also the reason I got out of Marine Reserves the other year.

Do you also have Federal service time?

I looked into the TXSG a few years ago, but wasn't impressed at what they offered to someone with my military skills and experience. For exampled, despite being a retired commissioned officer, they would not offer me rank similar to that which I held while on active duty.

So instead, I joined local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and was trained and certified by FEMA in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations...

I also volunteer under two programs with the San Antonio Police Department. I found those programs to be a much more productive and satisfying way to serve the community.

As for the TXSG being "appreciably more advanced" than what you had in Mississippi, I can only speculate how poorly run that program must be there. The TXSG is basically unarmed civilian volunteers in roles they could easily do without dressing up in uniform.

By the way, it's been discussed before...

Thanks, I checked those threads out.

The MSSG has a lot of good folks it. I made sure my Company had good solid training ongoing, including firearms training. My MP's were Taser and OC certified as well. About half of the MSSG had prior federal service. The balance were VFF, LEO, FF, etc. for the most part. My gripe was that although we were constantly assured that we were valued by the Gov and the AG, we rarely were deployed. I had to put us to work at local festivals and air shows to get any kind of decent training opportunities.

The TSG is very well developed with three branches and receives some funding from the state. They also seem to be deployed pretty often though, I'm just going from things I've seen reported.

As to being unarmed, the TNG is also generally unarmed when deployed during natural disasters and such but of course has been armed in the past... but I didn't join so I could carry a gun in uniform for kicks.

If things get ugly, I am sure the TSG will be armed as needed along with the TNG.

I was expecting to be brought in at the same rank coming from another SG, but if they denied a prior service commissioned officer the same rank, they probably won't bring me in at rank either.

Only thing I can do is make contact with the recruiter and see. I suppose it will depend on what they need and how well that matches up to my training and experience.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Oh, and not only did they fail to offer me a commensurate commissioned rank; but they didn't even come close to the highest enlisted rank I held before becoming an officer! In fact, given my background and experience, their "offer" was pretty insulting.

And my research into their activities confirmed that they are not doing anything that would require them to be a uniformed force. I honestly doubt they would ever be armed in any situation given that they don't complete proper weapons qualification.

I hope you have a better experience with them...
