Hello everyone.... I am looking to build my first 308. That being said, is there like a "check list" of parts that I will need to buy? I want to make sure I buy everything correctly the first time. Any kind of info will help.

    Thank you

The parts that don't have to be specific to the picture...Are butt stock, forearm, grip.

Optional configuration of certain parts are a flat top upper receiver. Different gas block, flash hider.

I'm in the middle of a 9mm pistol build myself. I'd say build your lower how you want & look for a complete upper that has a bolt carrier group already...unless you want one of those $300 bcg. With a complete upper, they have already been head spaced & test fired so you know your good to go.

Prices have dropped quite a bit on complete uppers over the last year.

It would be cheaper and easier to buy one and modify it.
Here is one for sale by a vendor here on tgt.

Better for who? I like building from the bottom up, it may not be any better but you'll take more pride in it if you build it yourself. Of course I tend to start thinking a lower price, but then some of the expensive stuff is cool.

My builds tend to double or triple in price by the time I finish.

When you choose your parts make sure you barrel and bcg are compatible. Some parts will not work with others. Some uppers will not work with some lowers. It can be a pain to find this out the hard way. I'm not saying don't build your own. I did and this is a lesson I learned along the way. If you are not planning on selling the rifle at any time build your own. If you don't keep them you will not get your investment back as a named brand pre built rifle. So I still would suggest to buy one and modify it or just buy a higher end rifle with what you want.

I have 2 ar15.... bought a m&p years back, and last year I went with a Daniel defense. I want an Ar10, but would like to build it and use it when I go Hog Hunting.

1st decide on Armalite or DPMS platform..........

DPMS mags are less expensive...but that is only one consideration........

I have a 450 Bushmaster for dreams of that. No need for an AR10 unless you do 243win.

    or 6.5 CM

You can get hammers in the AR15 platform. With the capability of changing them back or a different cal.

Never had an interest in an AR10. I've shot one in 308. Heavy as hell. Not really something you can swing like a 15. I guess for target shooting or stationary hunting..it'd rock.

Just to add my .02 here, since I saw this touched on but not explicitly stated, but the AR10/LR308 receivers are not mil-spec (dimentionally) like the AR15, which is the main reason different vendor components (e.g. upper/lower) may not be compatible.

Another consideration is that there are currently 3 different "main" specification types (that I'm aware of, may be more) - Armalite, DPMS (LR308), and DPMS Gen2, and each require matching bolt and barrel/extension types, as well as a compatible receiver. Most currently available large-frame receivers I've seen will accept standard regular/large frame parts for everything else. Build or buy, something to think about...

Keep in mind as well that building and tuning a large-frame AR can be far more involved than with an AR15 (have built several), so if you want something badass and have the ability/desire to tune it yourself, a custom-build can be a work of art. Otherwise, MUCH better to buy a name-brand build (which may still have issues, but at least you can send it in for service).

If you want to build, start with a good receiver set, pick a barrel/bcg, then go from there...

Mega Arms is pretty much untouchable in terms of quality receivers, but a upper/lower set will put you back almost as much as a complete entry-level rifle. Have heard good things about Aero as well, which is a bit cheaper (haven't used theirs large-frame stuff, but AR15 receivers have been extremely solid).

As for weight, it can be extremely manageable if built properly with that in mind, but either way it's not going to be a featherweight (not for the faint of heart or someone unused to carrying a heavy rifle; a good sling is a worthy investment)...

So would it be best to build and AR15 first, just to get my feet wet? Building an AR15 is also on my to do list.
Yea it would, because almost every aspect of it is exactly as the Grasshopper has described above.^^^^^^

    A "10" is just a different beast from a "15"
