I can't imagine anyone using an AR-15 as their primary home defense weapon. It would be too easy for the round to penetrate walls and keep on trucking. Kill or injure a neighbor. If it was just handy at the moment I could understand. But, if a jury got hold of the fact that the AR-15 was your first defense it would be hard to explain.

So you believe an AR penetrates much more drywall than a 9mm?

OK, but, why would you want something like that for 12 feet? It is more clumsy than a handgun on the table next to your chair. And, you are responsible for collateral damage in the background. Your self defense ends after the projectile passes through the objective of the defensive action.

I got a can full of xm193... but it shoots about as loose as Hilary Clinton. I had a 1:7 but since switched out to a 1:8. I would fling it if I was in a hard spot. But my primary round for that rifle is Hornady 55g Varmint Express. My rifle loves that stuff. It's just deadly and I'm confidant with it. I'm a precision guy... if a projectile doesn't shoot tight. I don't have interest and it gets in my head.

A heavy, slow handgun round penetrates more drywall and plywood than a light, fast rifle round.

Regardless if rifle, shotgun or handgun, your argument applies to any DGU situation.

Easier to hit with a rifle than a handgun at any distance, especially if you aren't on the sights properly or are in a high stress situation.

Not necessarily defending the use of a rifle, just stating facts.

Exactly. Hence why the subs for the 300blk is not a good Home defense round.

    From the article....

"KL: If you are among those who say, “If I can’t fix the problem with my eight rounds of .45 ACP, it can’t be fixed,” I say please grab a big old mug of black coffee and wake up from your dream. No one knows who, what, when, where or why the fight will start—blowhard statements only degrade an intelligent conversation. "

I am pretty sure I have seen actual test firings into simulated walls that show that both .308 and .223 penetrate just as much as handgun rounds (more in the case of .308).

Now to the general point, both rifle and pistol rounds penetrate enough that the danger exists.

If the first eight does not do the job, I have more mags.

If this is a "hits the fan" scenario, a person will likely be forewarned and have a rifle at hand.

If I was choosing to use an AR for home defense instead on my 1911 I would use IMI 77 Grain Razor Core or any MK 262 equivalent. And the reason for the IMI is I have a shitload of it.

Inside a typical house, a pistol will probably be easier to put on target more quickly. And unless the rifle an SBR or AR pistol, it will be much easier to maneuver.

In the article "...as the target moves away,..." If the target is moving away then shooting may not be necessary. It is difficult to shoot someone in the back and then claim self defense. My concern is with a jury that looks at the AR as an Assault Weapon. We know it isn't, but juries do have bias built up from years of media influence. The question becomes why did you convert and build an assault rifle into a home defense weapon? I, like most of you, have a 1911A1, .357, 2 .380's and an AR-15 loaded in my house at all times. My story will always be that it was the closest at the time.
