I have been quite impressed with the power of the .17 WSM and have been thinking of getting a Savage B. Mag .17 WSM.

Now I have been researching this rifle and really like the looks of the Savage with a Boyd stock (Target), but I also have seen many posts that say the Savage .17 is either great or that they have had problems (mainly with the bolt). Now I did see one post that said that Savage had fixed many of the problems, but I wanted to find out if any here have one and what your thoughts are on them.

Any feedback would be appreciated, Thank You.

I had Savage .17wsm. Light barrel model. Sold it.
The best group I got at 80 yds was about 1 inch. Got a little worse as it warmed up. Heavy barrel might be better. At this point, I am looking at a Savage .17hmr with heavy barrel. Same accuracy wise, a little less velocity and bullet weight but the gun and the ammo is cheaper than most 17WSMs.

Not being familiar with the round I googled it.

Since there was a previous discussion on using nail gun blanks, I found it interesting that it supposedly descended from the .27 caliber nail-gun blank.

Yeah, most that I read on the barrels say that it is a lot better with the heavy barrel, same with the HMR. As far as accuracy, I read a lot saying the HMR is a little more accurate at 100yds and 150yds (1/2 to 3/4 MOA compared to 1 MOA), but then the HMR drops off dramatically, while the WSM is hitting steel at 300yds and beyond consistently.

I started out looking at .17HMR, but then .17WSM caught my attention. Savage makes both that look very similar, so I haven't made up my mind yet.

Not to dissuade you, but with similar pricing is there a reason not to step up to .22 Hornet?

Used to have a Ruger that shot great with ammo cost pretty close to 17WSM. It was LOUD though IIRC. Sold it over a decade ago so memory is fuzzy.

Yes, I did, but then I also saw selections of rifles were limited (at a higher cost) and I'm not sure that 17WSM around 25 to 30 cents a round is what I would call close when 17 Hornet is around 50 to 55 cents a round.

I just searched and saw they were within a few dollars per box (.17 at $16 and hornet at $19). Didn’t check round count since I used to buy 50 round boxes. I now see the price I saw was for 20 rounds of Hornady Vmax.

Yeah, not that it was out of the realm of possibility, it's just that moving my attention to 17WSM from 17HMR wasn't nearly as big a price difference as it was stepping up to 17 Hornet. Plus I would probably shoot the WSM more at nearly half the cost in ammo, and that played on my thoughts.

I really liked shooting that .17 when we were out shooting rabbits, and that's what got me looking into buying one in the first place.

Although I won't claim I'm as good a shooter as 22plinkster, this video certainly doesn't dissuade me as far as accuracy. This is also the exact rifle I am thinking of getting:

I picked up one of the skinny barrel models at Walmart when they were closing them out. I paid right at $157 for the rifle.

I've only shot it at 50 yards so far and it's plenty accurate enough for anything I'd use it for. It does start to wander if you shoot it too fast though.

One nice thing about it was that during the great rimfire drought of 2008-2016 the .17 WSM was still available.

I've always wanted a .22 Hornet. But upon serious review I realized I could download .223 at a much cheaper price.

Every hunting rifle in the house is either Savage 7mm08, or 6.5 Creedmoor. Savage has stepped up their game for accuracy. Though, I have to admit I didn't like the 6.5 CM LR as it was. It was been given a new Hogue grip, a geissele trigger replaced the heavy rear with a much lighter one, put on a duel blue line sling and the latest Burris Scope. Most of their bolt actions just need a good scope. The 6.5 LR needed a complete make over.

After doing much research I decided to buy this rifle from gunbuyer.com:

Although I couldn't find one around town, I did find a .17 HMR with the same stock and really liked the feel of the Boyds wood laminated stock. I think that pushed me to buy this one.

I have the HMR version. You could shot some rabbits with it.

Looking forward to a range report.
