    Alright,

I've got a HK 91 that I purchased back in '79. I haven't shot it in well over 20 years. I've been thinking of parting ways with it but really want to keep a 7.62x51 MBR in the safe.

Give me your suggestions on a good one. Not interested in a FN-FAL.

    Ruger SR 762.

Chrome plated BCG. Chrome lined, cold hammer forged barrel. Chrome plated piston and adjustable regulator. Folding iron BUS. Magpul stock. And if you like two stage triggers, it comes with a decent Ruger trigger. Plus excellent warranty service should it ever be needed.

    Accurate, sweet shooting.

My Ruger 556 with a gas system is a heavy beast. The civilian M-4 I picked up was like an old friend except the barrel was longer, the fun switch slot was missing, the front post was not tritium, and the rear aperture was as pop up rather than a dial you had to twist for your eye relief. About as light though.

    I bought a HK91A3 in 1983, and loved it.
I asked my dad for an HK 91 when I was 16, in the 1970s. He ordered it at a local shop but all they did was make excuses. The money that was going to get it for me eventually went to buy me my first Wichita. Not as good an investment but a much nicer gun. :)

    To All,

If I was better at "assembling stuff", I would go with a G3, as the AR "platform" leaves me COLD.
(Otoh, I did well with the Bundeswehr's G3 when I was last over there & it's CHEAP to build IF you can weld at all. = I don't weld "for beans".)

    yours, satx

Two AR-pattern types that deserve a look are:

    (1) For low-price, high-value, the S&W M&P-10. It's an outstanding rifle.
    (2) For higher-price, very high-value, the POF Revolution deserves a look. It's basically a .308 that is the same size and weight as an AR-15.

Both rifles have 5R barrels and will shoot reliably and accurately. Neither is target rifle, but both would be quite useful in the MBR role.

For me it would be a custom tuned AR10 in
    308 w/ 13.5" bbl & dual-optics.

IMHO, just about the best all-around option there is, assuming no issues with a little weight (not too much), and thorough reliability tuning/testing.

Dual-optics gives you both CQB and MR/LR capabilities, and 13.5 is about the sweet-spot for maneuverability while maintaining sufficient velocity & TE to reach out and touch things...The shorter bbl will likely even be more accurate (within effective range) due to superior harmonics...

ETA: quick check shows a 168smk from a 13.5" 1/10 bbl predicted to go transonic at around 930yds with almpst 460FPE still (at ~6500 DA); that's some solid reach, and the better short-bbl harmonics will likely increase general precision within that range...

I think those estimates are way too optimistic for that barrel length and bullet choice.

A Sig 716 does well. I prefer it over my M1A. Both are heavy pigs to anyone not used to something like that.

The Sig 716 is good, but I found mine a little front heavy compared to the Ruger SR762. Just a little different balance.

That's a fair statement, as it was just a quick calculation and I can't personally attest to accuracy of the numbers.

That said, I do believe those numbers are pretty reasonable, assuming the source data was good. Here's how I got those numbers:

I didn't have any chrony data on the 13.5 directly, despite having a very similar build a while back (was actually my first AR platform self-build, one of the few I regret having to sell; old pic at bottom of post).

However, I was able to find some data published in the following TTAG article, and used the published speed of 2380fps for the 168gr projectile:

    https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2...t-barrel-length-muzzle-velocity-and-accuracy/

(graph from article - mods feel free to remove if necessary):

I then just used the 2380fps MV in my BC and ran the tables with atmosphere...pretty straightforward, and a good starting point short of rifle/load specific data...

Didn't include links here to studies on bbl length harmonics as figured would be too much for one post...

And pic of my old similar build (this one had 13.75 bbl with pinned comp = 16.25" oal):
