IMHO, magazine mods are for extremes... longer OAL, heavier bullets... just like 300BLK

Keep it reasonable and you won't need mag mods... but where's the fun in that?

I read the posts and have a suggestion:

The .458 Socom is the upper assembly for an AR-15. There are no modifications needed in the lower assembly or to the magazine. Some grind a radius on the forward end of the magazine claiming that it feeds better. I have never modified a magazine nor do I know anyone who has. Use standard, metal AR magazines.

In short...………….. why sweat the cost of a .458 Socom? Assemble an upper assembly in .458 Socom, push two pins and you have a shoulder cannon. When you're done hunting or shooting, push two pins and change the rifle back to a 5.56 or .300 BLK.

That was the whole purpose of the .458 Socom….easy change over for operations where they had to drop sentries in their tracks. Socom= Special Operations Command. The suppressed versions of the .458 are quiet, accurate and very lethal.

Flash... That's where I'm going with this. Swap an upper and lets roll. Do you know if the PMAGS will give me trouble? That's all I run. Trying to stream line my stock pile.

My Hybrid does a great job at negating recoil on my 338lm. I'm confidant it will tame the 458. I watched some ballistic tests on YouTube last night. It's just devastating.

So much want... I had an RRA 458 socom bought at one time, but got it pulled out from under me.

If you really want to blow up hogs, look up 45 raptor. (I know, I'm just evil)

    For those that don't know, it's basically a .308 necked-up to .452, using 460 S&W Magnum bullets... about 1000 lb-ft of energy more than 458 socom.

But requires AR10 platform (because it's a big azz round)

For reloaders, it also uses 460S&W Magnum dies, but with a .308 shell holder. Basically, it's a rimless 460S&W Magnum with max pressure of 65k. It will work in 460XVR revolvers with a moon clip mod.

The .50 Beo is another option for Ar 15 platform. I've shot one a few times, kicks a little harder than 12ga with high brass. My buddy said he was visiting the shop & Alexander told him he built it to shoot through the Lexan glass in prisons. If the prisoners rioted & locked them selves in they could break the Lexan & get them under control.

If you build a .458 Socom upper, the bolt face is easily purchased at places like Midway. Be aware that the upper housing ejection port is enlarged a bit for the .458. I can't remember what we did with the recoil spring and buffer. Perhaps someone can expand on that.
    It's not a difficult build.

Once you switch to the AR-10 platform, costs skyrocket! That's way over my head, financially.

I had picked up a .458 socom BCG and stripped upper from Primary Arms on sale earlier this year. Then they had a barrel on sale a month or so later...haven’t built it yet. Waiting to get dies and bullets. May find some commercial rounds to start with. In the mean time my hybrid 46 is in NFA jail....should be out around Christmas time.....

There is another thread on here somewhere that talks more details. It was mentioned by a member that he used H110, so I use that powder. Already had it for 300 Blk, so I used it.

You may want to check load data for the 405 and see what powders are suggested. You might already have one.

The Lyman book had several listed, not the same ones for different bullet weights.

Well, I'm confused. My Lyman book had OAL at 2.24 for 300g bullets. I looked online last night, and saw loads with OAL at around 2.1 for 300g bullets.

I got some more research to do.
