If I was ever going to live in CA it would be in the Ventura area. I like it alot, and the surf fishing is fantastic.

As far as freaks are concerned, you should have taken a drive through Hollywood. They call it Hollyweird for a reason. Saw things I'd never seen before down there.
My late brother worked in the film industry, so I was out there often to visit... and yeah... Hollyweird is very much that... but that weirdness existed in other parts of CA too, like San Francisco and Santa Cruz to as much (or lager) degree.

That area in Nor Cal is amazing.. some of the best off-roading and motorcycling (on and off-road) I've seen in my lifetime. My wife's friends lost their home and business in the Camp Fire that leveled Paradise... they say 100 people (might be more) are still missing up there.

A couple of years ago we were living in the Santa Cruz mountains, and the Loma Prieta fire came within a mile of the house... I've never packed a little convertible with so much stuff... and had to bug out, so I can understand how those people felt trying to escape... Godspeed to those that didn't make it. :(

The state mismanages the huge amounts of public land in California and has gutted the wildlife and forestry departments leading to uncontrolled vegetation and timber. This, along with the huge encroachment by the public into previously uninhabited areas leads to these fires starting and the ones that pop up during the high wind seasons are especially bad. One of the biggest offenders in Northern California is PG&E, the monster utility company, whose poor maintenance of utility lines has caused many of these fires. The state is in the process of passing bail out legislature so the taxpayers can pay the huge fines PG&E is saddled with as the result of their liability for the fire damages. Having lived in that area and having seen the conditions leading up to the fires as well as living through them, I can say that it is the worse of all worlds. The worse part is that the story keeps repeating itself over and over again. No one seems to care that the firefighters put their lives on the line year after year for situations that could have been avoided.

Might be how this one started also, Scroll down to 2nd story.

I know in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, California Highway Patrol assisted in search and rescue, and honestly, while I disagree with most everything about California and Californians, they're still Americans and thus our brothers and sisters.

While I agree we have to as Americans help every state out when in need, I believe it was CHP that abused this old lady in New Orleans. That was a pathetic show of force and disgusting IMO. Grant it, they had to deal with a whole lot of idiots down there, but to assume where all idiots is just bad. We sure learned a lot from Katrina and the mayor that put the order out is bad, but the military and officers that enforced it are just as bad. I will also point out a group of National Guard that refused that order and stayed true to their oath....Oath Keepers!

    Hoji,

What you're doing is highly commendable.

Do you think californians would come here if needed and return your kind of help to Texas?
Yes they would if given the chance. There area ton of normal caring people in CA.
The people in Malibu? Not so much

I moved here 18 months ago from southern California and I was out on boats helping during Harvey, or wading around in my neighborhood bringing single mother's food , he tried to get to my neighborhood but couldn't get close enough so helped out where he could.
I spent the next month mucking.out strangers homes, turned down a ton of OT just so I could help.

We had a similar situation up in Oregon a few months back. Always hazy and a few days we could smell the fire.

I think the whole left coast is or was burning.
I remember central Oregon had a huge fire in 2011, I rode past much of it and was glad to finally get out of the smoke.

90+ percent of the town of Paradise is burned to the ground.

It looks like a post apocalyptic movie set here. Except that it is real.
