Several, actually a bunch of years ago a friend lived in an area where there were a lot of daytime house burglaries. They would break a window in the garage door and reach in and unlock the garage door to gain entry. She came home one day and saw the broken window in the garage door and her heart just sank. She opened the door with the opener and her GS was sitting there waiting to be petted. With that look that said look what I did. The inside of the garage door was covered in blood and lots on the floor. For some reason it appeared the burglar never gained entry. She said the dog got lots of attention and ate steak that night.

My german shepherd scared the hell out of our fedex man. He came to our breezeway and we had let our dog out in the backyard. He went to go open the door to push in a package and she was right there, teeth bared and growling.

Tnext time that we saw him, he told us that he was pretty sure he was about to die. They are great dogs

Husband is obsessed with our next pooch being a Belgian Malinois, which he swears he’s going to train to be badass. My girl and a gun instructor has some. Very high energy. I’m not really wanting this, think it’s too much dog for us to handle with us almost over 50. It’s not like I’m going to go jogging with it. I’m going to have to settle for throwing stuff over and over for fetch and playing tug a war and not letting my fingers nipped by mistake/ excitement. A loyal dog to guard me might be worth it though. Not really a pet person here. Sigh.

    W.D.

Those long handled tennis ball thrower thingies are fun and are pretty good at not allowing finger chomping by your beloved doggy.

The one thing never discussed is cleaning up after pooch pitches a loaf or many.....

One of the reasons I prefer cats.

Yes, you have to clean up for them too, but all in one litter box.

I know about this as I'm the designated litter box honcho!

P.S. I get your point about impending over 50 considerations and a high energy dog.

I love dogs of all breeds, but don't have the energy required to keep up with em.

Cats, yeah, I can handle them. Plus, they're very loving when treated kindly and I do..

I/We have two and they scramble to get in my lap any time I sit down in the house.

I think a German Shepherd might be more relaxed than the belgians. Ive never had one of those before to compare

    d1959,

I think, but not sure of your point?

    Would you please elaborate?

As to having his family pay for the clean up, I wasn't serious.

To be fair, some people go off the tracks and become criminals when the family isn't to blame at all.

I've known a few criminals that came from great quality, highly accomplished families who raised them right.

Sometimes, their children through no fault of their own are born sociopaths.

I know one family that had five children.

Four of them became very honorably, big successes in life and one became a low life criminal.

    It happens......

    Malinois are great!
Very smart, very protective, we couldn't even discipline the kids around the one we had, lol.
Hope you have a large yard, we had a "track" worn out in the grass just inside the fence.

ETA: She was an inside dog, as all of mine have been.

    Wildcat Diva,

Could I suggest a BULL TERRIER?? = The English white Bull is LOYAL, SMART, agile, of moderate size (50-70 pounds), easily trained & seem to understand instinctively who "is up to no good".
(in my experience, they are GREAT companions & seem HAPPIEST when nearby their "nearest & dearest", rather than "bouncing off the walls" & or "just barking for no reason". = IF a Bull seems to be excited/VERY intent, "things are rapidly turning BAD". - Best go see what the problem IS.)

    just my OPINION, satx

He’s set on what he’s set on for his own reasons. He’s done lots of research and knows what he wants. He’s not asking me. He’s attracted to their amazing capacity to be smart and guard and lunge like an amazing rocket and zoom in there to protect. I’m sure I’ll have to just deal with it, it’s not really my call.

We rent a home, and so we do have a yard. We may have a home someday with a bigger yard.

We aren’t getting such a dog yet.
