Hmmm... I guess what I say doesn't matter, because Moonpie has me on ignore anyway, but ...

But, I want to take this in a slightly different direction, but it's pertinent to the subject. Working on a job where there were some carpenters working that needed to mortise some door jams. One of them happened to ask me: "What do you do with these cheap chisels when they get dull, besides throw them away?" I couldn't believe it, but said "sharpen them". Took his chisel and took the belt sander to it, followed up by some 120 grit sandpaper and in 5 minutes, he had a brand new chisel.

    .

I use my belt sander on my axes and machetes and chisels. Works great. I keep a semi-fine belt on it, can't recall the grit.

Let me help you out....most likely 100. I turn my belt sander upside down and put the tool to it. The 90° refers to the direction of the edge to the belt, in other words, the axe head would be 90° to the belt travel. Works much better that way than the direction you would use a stone.

Northern Tool, don't they get their tools from the same place as Harbor Freight?

Yes, that would be China. Good luck finding anything anywhere that doesn't come from China.

I don't mind paying more for quality, but if I'm forced to buy chinese stuff, why overpay for a name? Besides, when harbor freight stepped up their warranty, they stepped up their quality too. I break more craftsman tools than I do harbor freight ones these days. (quite different than in the past). And guess which one I'd place money on to be around to honor future warranties easily?

HF has its place in the tool business. For years bought all my nail guns, those for leaving in my truck and onsite use, at HF and Sec 179'd them.

Brad nailers, at $14.99 a pop, made the bottom line look better when they grew legs ... and still have a few that didn't that are going strong after ten years.

I like wandering around in there. Always something I've never seen.

One thing for sure. When you round up all the knives in the kitchen. Then you take them in the garage. Clamp them one by one in a vise. File them to where it'll shave hair....

You have to tell the respectful people using said knives....a minimum of 3 times that the $hit is no BS sharp.

The GF ignored the warning. She diced her finger. With a following comment, "I'm glad you told me the knives are sharp".

    Yep, something like that.

Surgical arkansas stone as final stone for razor edge.

For quick sharpening, the Worksharp looks great. Ordered one.

You probably ordered it from someone using SmartPost or whatever, and they don't want to get dinged for delivering it a day late - despite the fact they're going to deliver it a day late. Happens here more often than not.

I hope that's the case. Besides that the post office was closed yesterday, so they couldn't have delivered it.

I have an Old Timer, Schrade. Model 152 "Sharp Finger". I can't seem to sharpen it. Years ago, I found the knife on a roof at a place I was staying at. Still in the sheath. Sun roasted and rusty.

I have used a stone. A dull diamond grit, sandpaper, file, ceramic rod, and a strop. This knife refuses to take a sharp edge. It will get to where it feels sharp checking with a finger. Then when you test it on paper, cloth, leather. It's dull as phuck.

What the hell is up with this knife???

Thanks for reminding me that I also have a Sharp Finger (somewhere). If I can find it, I'll try to sharpen it & report back. IIRC, last I tried, it sharpened ok. I probably used ceramic rods

I just used some wet dry 180 grit. Taking my time. Following the edge. Then a ceramic rod.

Feels sharp but isn't. This is at least the 10th time. I've sat down with this knife and tried to put an edge on it. Nope, won't take it. By my hands.

USPS said they left my Work Sharp on the porch this morning at 10:10. They lie.
Oh, I did finally get it. I found it on the neighbors front porch, two houses down from me. Noticed the box as I was driving by and decided to check it out. It had been sitting there for a couple of days and the lady hadn't been home. Fortunately I got to it before all the rain started.

Now you know why it got left where you found it.

I was thinking that. I figured some kids left it on roof playing army or something. Then I wondered why they were allowed to wander off with it to leave it.

    Yep.

    The knife is crap.

You should try to re-temper it.
Use a propane torch and gently heat up the edge of the blade to a very low red. (Hint: Do this in a darkened room)
    Quench in oil.
