The AR is a horribly unreliable gun and the only gun you should ever consider is an AK!

JUST LOOK HOW UNRELIABLE THE AR-15 IS!

    Look how it handles mud!

Look how much better the glorious AK handles mud comrades.

Look at how badly the AR jams up from a little sand. Stupid capitalists. Loose tolerances are much better.

When will people learn that the AR-15 just can't handle dirt or gunk in it's action? It is a flawed design and the AK is the way to go. I bet the AR can't even go a hundred rounds without jamming. Anyone who says otherwise is just brainwashed by capitalist propaganda!

The stupid capitalists should have learned from how unreliable their gun was in Vietnam!

The AK is the way to go comrades.

To those who don't watch the videos or that have issues detecting extreme levels of sarcasm, this is not an attack on the AR. It's not even an attack on the AK. It's a look at the reality of these guns and a reminder that myths are often not based in that reality. The AR is not unreliable, and it can in fact handle dirt and grime. In some cases, it can do this better than the AK. The AK is also not this magical superior example of reliability that everyone likes to claim it to be. It's a machine, and machines fail. They can and do have flaws. It's not perfect, nothing is.

Love the sarcasm and humor. IMO an akm still outshines the ar for simplicity of maintenance. In a shtf setting, this is important. What’s also important is a light weight rifle with a carry handle option like my stag model 1. Both my stag and my arsenal sam7sf have pros and cons and both are my go to. Both are reliable. Both butter smooth. Really other than maintenance, the sam7 is by far more durable. The butt stock is silly strong. The hinge is just about bomb proof. The heavy receiver gives it mild to no recoil. On the other hand hiking with my stag is a dream. Dunno...

As one of the videos said toward the end, the AK will take abuse over a long period better than an AR, but you gotta ask yourself how realistic that is to happen. You don't have to go over the AR with a Q-tip to get it clean enough to function reliably, and honestly you could probably make due with a rag and motor oil if you needed to. It's unlikely that we'd find ourselves in a situation where we would have to go 6 months or more without being able to do even basic maintenance on our guns. That is when the AK really starts to shine. Just don't dump it in mud or you're going to have a bad time, lol.

Durability is up for discussion and is probably gun specific. You have stamped vs milled receivers for the AK, and forged vs billet receivers for the AR. I don't think either is likely to break short of being run over by a deuce and a half.

They're both wonderful guns with far more advantages than pretty much any other rifle ever made. I do not see reliability as being an issue with either despite the longstanding myths to the contrary.

Agreed. The only flaw I see with an ar is possibly bending the extension tube. Due to whatever abuse may cause that. That scenario alone is very unlikely and I myself have an issue with destructive testing of guns. What abuse is realistic? IMO a fall, waist height drop, drop from a car seat, fall from leaning. If anything as long as the gun is accurate, iron sights are an absolute must. I could make a case for other guns I have being my go to for other scenarios. My mini14 is one. Sure the mags are slower to reload but once you build muscle memory it ain’t too bad. The mini14 is a great rifle in my hands. That old blade front sight just works for me. I could also make a case for my browning blr. It has the Williams rear peep sight and is fast to get on target. Under a 100 yards, having a fast sight acquisition with a 30-06 isn’t a bad deal. I agree with your thoughts.

One of the guys who did the mud testing (Karl) actually had a completely unintentional accident happen to his gun. It was in a bag along with several other rifles was was accidentally backed over by a truck at a match. It bent the tube. Curiously, they had one of those fully polymer GWAC lowers in the bag too and it was completely fine since they can flex a bit. There's no traditional buffer tube to bend in those, and unlike other polymer lowers, they were designed from the ground up as a polymer lower (they don't have an issue with breaking at the back like other polymer lowers do).

They would be great for a lightweight build.
