Do you ever get bored? I don't as a rule but to all rules there are exceptions. Between project pieces or just need a break, I get bored then my mind gets really obsessed with my hobby. When there is a bunch of junk laying around in corners I fantasize and imagine what I could with stuff. Most of the time I make some really stupid contraptions that are more of a waste of time than practical.
A few years ago while looking over a relic Swiss Mauser action that once was a 8mm (7.92mm) with the barrel blown off sometime back in time. A nice large ring receiver with a decent bolt and not much else. Considering that the 8mm cartridge shared the same base dimensions with many other cartridges like .308, .30-06. .22-250 Remington and ,45 acp etc. I weighed the possibilities. The .45 acp was my choice and it was off to the races (not a fast race) so I got paper and pencil, made some calculations. .45acp military ball ammo at 880fps is subsonic but great energy. To make something accurate in a shoulder held gun was the goal. So at what particular barrel length would the expanding gasses of ignition be consumed at the point of exit? Doing so would optimize the energy and limit the amount of muzzle blast (report) on firing. I had a chunk of rifled barrel stock with a .45 bore. Heavy stock that I picked up for no apparent reason somewhere cheap! Had British Birmingham proofs on it but a large OD. I didn't think it would be a very long barrel when finished. so I didn't consider reducing it's over all diameter. So I threaded it to fit the Mauser action. Chambered it for .45acp. I was beginning to be happy. Put the damned thing in a rest and started test firings and length cuttings. Pretty cool, (I thought) Now what? I had the barreled action green Parkerized added some scope mounts and some optics. put the whole thing on s custom fingerhole laminated stock. Made a few accessory adjustments and additions, Timney adjustsble trigger, spirit leve etc.
It works pretty well. Not really silenced but not noisy either (weird sound though) quite accurate out to a couple hundred yards. Kinda nuts huh???
It was fun and gets attention at the range.... laughs too! John

Not nuts at all. This is the kind of weird I like.

The best of 1911s can do 1" at 50 yards. I assume this can do better. What sort of accuracy are you getting? Handloads or factory? When you say "quite accurate", I become intrigued. :)

    Mornin' Ben,
It has been kind of a crap shoot. The standard .1911 barrel is 5". I don't have the exact barrel length with me at this time. When I finally get home I will let you know what I have.
Initially I based my ammo with Military issue ball .45 but there are inconsistencies with Lake City loadings not that it matters with 1911s. I use hand loads duplicating mil-spec velocity with 230 grain FMJ Round nose .451 diameter bullets.
The darned thing is a bit on the heavy side but the nice thing is, there is absolutely no recoil. Laying on a bench and pulling the trigger the gun does not move. From a bench, I get consistent 2 -3 inch groups at 200 yards. Barrel length and optimizing gas expansion I am sure makes the difference. Different powders may do more things but I haven't done extensive tests. I also do not have the specific load data with me but I use Unique. I have no idea what the velocity is. The report is something like a dull "whump" just weird...
    I hope this helps.......... John

I'm not surprised. According to my reading, people used to scoff that the DeLisle couldn't be accurate because, after all, it was just a .45. However, testing proved it to be amazingly accurate.

A side benefit of that big, heavy projectile at those speeds is the resistance to crosswinds. I figure you've got a mighty satisfying plinker there.

    Good job!

I had heard of the DeLisle at the end of WWII but it was suppressed and made from an Enfield Service rifle. Not real reliable and illegsl with the suppressor shroud as an altered SBR, I was just thinking outside the box with this to avoid ATF/NFA rules. It is not silenced in any way just weird... like me... I have other boredom projects too....

Hmmmmm. One of those in 9mm that would use my 1911 mags would be very intriging indeed.
    Very nice work.

It might be worth it to thread the barrel and attach the smallest, shortest, lightest .45ACP suppressor you can find. I REALLY like the whole idea of your tinkering on this weapon. Good job!

Saw a 1903 years ago that was in 45acp except the bolt was cutdown or shortened and it was adapted to feed from a mag although I don't remember if it was a 1911 mag or something else.

Not too much different really is my CCU (Carbine Conversion Unit) from Mech Tech mated with a Glock 21 lower .45acp. Silenced short barrel.

Very quiet and accurate at least to 100 yards.

That 45 rifle is just too cool.

I went an easier route and got a Ruger 77/44 threaded.
.44 Special out of it is a lot like your ACP?

I love suppressed pistol caliber carbines in general.

A pleasure to shoot and great for varmints out to 100 yards or so.

I'm not often one for lasers but the Viridian on my 9mm carbine is a guest-pleaser.

You sir are way out of my league as far as tinkering goes, very nice!
Just gotta get in there and try. Don't worry about messing things up. I botch up alot of ideas more than ones that work. Some that work don't work so well but when I get one right, I feel good. It makes the ten or so screw-ups feel better!
