The Gun Range in Killeen just got inspected and is facing $214,387 in OSHA fines for high lead levels. From the linked press report it sounds like someone dropped a dime on them. So that's nice.

Any of you Killeen guys know anything about this? Have they closed their doors?

If OSHA wants to go by the letter of the law and their interpretation of it, they can shut down or massively fine just about any business out there.

How many ranges have you been to that had folks cleaning up with HEPA vacuums? Or that would fail a lead exposure test during the day while folks were actively using the range?

If OSHA shows up, the only safe option is to temporarily close the business and all employees go on lunch break.

I have heard rumors, but this is the first time I have seen anything concrete. Have not been there but have talked on the phone with them and talked to customers. I personally know several.
They all talk about what a clean place it is. Although expensive. When I called, I was told that steel case ammo, bi-metal and non-jacketed ammo was not allowed. No solid lead projectiles.

Something fishy somewhere. The last time I went to Red's, it was filthy. And this place has been open less than a year I think.

A couple of years ago, all the local indoor ranges pulled brooms from their firing lines. I asked why and the operator told me that a range in Dallas had gotten heavily fined for lead exposure and brooms were specifically cited.

I deal with regulatory agencies on a daily basis, and they can shut you down or fine you out of business with little or no evidence. You get an office that has a vendetta against something - shooting range lead, for example - and they can bully their way around every one they locate. Politics play a huge role in what they do. I've seen cases where OSHA issued a huge fine and when the company made clear they would challenge the fine, OSHA told them that if they did, they would inspect all their facilities over and over again. If you or I did that, it would be considered extortion.

I've been there a few times. Haven't shot, but checked things out. Nice place. Very clean. This seems like someone with a Vindetta. The place is used heavily by police and military guys. They have their stuff in order.

I expect the range to do everything possible to protect its employees and its customers.
    So,,,,,,,
Do you actually know anything about the place?
The only reason I have not tried the place is the cost. But I have friends and customers that are members. And I have talked to them. And they agree that it is a nice range and CLEAN. Cleaner than most of the indoor ranges I have seen. As well as doing what they can to keep lead to a minimum.
Personally, I would like to see what standard OSHA is using as most people would not be exposed to the building for long periods at a time. I would also expect there to be elevated lead levels in any indoor range by nature of the business.
