I was going to post this in Off Topic, but I think it's appropriate for the survival section.

Anybody here into amateur radio? I stick to the VHF/UHF bands, no HF yet, but thinking about going for General soon.

If you're a HAM, sound off!

I've had my ham radio license for just over 20 years now. Most of the time I'm on VHF on the morning commute, but do go on HF from time to time. Some voice, but mostly PSK-31.

There seem to be a fair number of 2m repeaters that are under utilized and supported by clubs.

I've mostly been listening to local Fusion digipeaters on 440. Doesn't seem like there's a lot of activity for such a densely populated area.

There's a lot of people who don't have digital radios yet (like me!).
There's some activity on 2 meter analog repeaters, but probably a little less than that on digital.

I am a somewhat active HAM. Just got into the Yaesu Fusion radios, fun. On HF, lately mostly FT8. Also a bit involved in ARES, but only for checking in, verifying the radios we have in the hospitals are functional. Also a VE and in the Travis/Williamson county area we probably test 20+ per month. And yes, some that test are into it as survivalists, but I do not care. They may get more interested in being part of the hobby after they are licensed.

I'm not really into it for "prepping" either, only fun. I'm rocking a Yaesu FT2D. Great radio.

    J-gunner,

YEP. I'm a HAM but a rather "non-traditional" one, in that I'm seldom on the air UNLESS I'm deeply involved in a hurricane/tornado/storm as a team-member for rescue/recovery.

I am mostly on DMR these days. Sometimes Allstar.

I will look to see if I have .88 programmed

    Maybe I’ll see you there

I got my license a couple months ago. I don't talk often, but it's fun. I've been fascinated by radio communications since I was a kid.

Dan, trying to remember, did you get out to the Milam County club meetings? Second Tuesday at Banda's in Rockdale. We will also be doing Field Day in June, but more a social gathering with some radio!
