.224 calkyrie Vs 6.5 Creedmore

So I have an itch to build a new rifle. I can't choose between the .224 or 6.5. This will be a shits and giggles build. I don't plan to reload anytime soon. I know the .224 had some barrel issues last year.

Help me decide

Personally I'd go 6.5 creedmoor. Nice precision rifle, good long distance shooter, fairly inexpensive to shoot and has plenty of selection for good factory ammo. You can also use it to hunt if you really wanted to

A MSR type rifle?

Do you want small frame or large frame? That helps to dictate the round. A lot more options, and cheaper for the 15 size.

Having said that, 6.5 is a known round, Valkyrie still has some growing pains.

Guessing you are building an AR (MSR) type rifle?

Like asked, does the frame size matter?

Does factory ammo price matter?

Does recoil matter?

Personally I wanted a 6.5 Creedmoor immediately upon release.

I had no interest in a 224 Valkyrie until I found a good deal (and haven't fired it yet sadly).

To add to all comments above, if you go with the .224 Valkyrie and don't reload, know the barrel you're getting and whether it's accurate with the ammo you plan to shoot. If I where buying a Valkyrie barrel, it would be made Craddock. They've had excellent accuracy since the Valkyrie was released. One of the few that can make that claim.

Yes on this being an AR rifle. Price of ammo isn't a factor for me since it wont be shot a ton like my 3 gun rifles. Plus range only goes out to 600 yards. So which round recoils badly? And weight of rifle isn't a concern to me

Both are supposed to be pretty good soft shooting rounds. I've not used .224 but 6.5 was very manageable

6.5 is very manageable, less than a 308 depending on the rifle. I expect the 224 V to be even less.

If you shoot 3 gun neither will be an issue.

Neither is going to give you any problems with recoil. Personally, I'd go with the 6.5 Creedmoor. It's more established and has proven itself to be a great, accurate round. From what I've heard, the .224 Valk isn't quite living up to the hype.

I'd go with a 24" barrel

And they are 20% off today. I bought a 22” a few months ago on sale, the next week the 24” was on sale. Would have rather had the 24” but the 22” should work fine.

24" seems to be the go to length for the 6.5 CM.

Mine's 2 inches longer, and I like it. Way too long for an AR platform though.

6.5 creedmoor is a legitimate improvement to a relatively obsolescent caliber. Its also very common considering how new it is. I see far more shooters with it than .300blk, .224V, and 6.8spc combined.

.224 valkyrie seems to be more marketing than performance, and if you're going to get a big long barrel no matter what, might as well get an AR10 reciever.

Good article on the effect of barrel length for the .224 Valkyrie. I prefer a 22" barrels in both 6.5 CM and .224 Valkyrie. You don't loose much by dropping 2".

Not really new been out over 10 years. Just not "discovered" until recently.

Truth be told inside 600 a straight 223 will work pretty well and not be handicapped much at all.

FYI, a 6.5 Creedmoor upper won't fit on an AR-15 lower; it requires an AR-10 lower.

Were you thinking of the 6.5 Grendel?
