Been pricing a new truck as my 2006 Silverado nears 100K miles. 2019 model I like tips the scales at $64K after the summer discounts and before the additional 8.25% sales tax. My current truck was $35K out the door so it makes me take a step back.

Now, in my neck of the woods I see many 30-somethings driving fully loaded new trucks with a $50K bass boat and a $25K ATV in the garage....not to mention the mortgage and 2-3 kids. I don't know how they do it. Even at my peak when I made $250K+ a year I could never swing that.

    Gunz are icky.
    Agree.
See the same thing and wonder how they afford it.
Just the note on the truck has to be $1k a month.
Saw loans available for 96 MONTHS!

    Hory clap.

When I was in this spot 6 months ago, I forced myself to search hard for a used 17/18 with <25K miles on it.

Finally found exactly the features/options/gearing I wanted at a 30% discount from a Honda dealer who took it in on trade.

They have me a fair trade and I was out the door @56% of the original sticker price, with factory warranty.

As for the rest, lots of folks are living paycheck to paycheck making min payments and financing to the lowest payment.

If you can afford to: Don't get into a payment plan. Pay the whole thing up front. You'll save tons of money.

That's how I've been doing it.

Same with the house - no mortgage.

Doing this saves you from having it broken off in you.........

People enjoy living up to their eyeballs in debt I guess. I have one small car payment that's almost finished and then I never want another one again. Probably won't happen but I'm going to fight like crazy to avoid it.

I'd rather do without and be debt free.
    /thread.

Plus, most of the guys who buy all these expensive trucks and toys don’t use them. If they “use” them it’s not practical. Every truck I have had was used for work. By the time I’m done with them I’m grateful to get 2 grand trade in. I take care of my rigs mechanically I just have no fear in a rigs cosmetics.

Street queens, that’s all most expensive jacked up trucks are.

    Middle of no where
Just got a new truck during Fords Truck month. It was a close out 2018 F150 5.0, 4x4 offroad with sport package, sticker was $55k, I got it for $40k with 0% interest. I traded in a 2013 f150 4x4 ecoboost that I got in 2014 during Truck month. It had a $42k sticker & got it for $29k. I really didnt want another payment but the EcoBoost had the dreaded cold start knock so it had to go before the timing chain broke.

I've always found the more you make it seem you dont need to buy a new car your just looking, the more the dealer tries to get your business & they just start cutting the pricing down to get you to buy. Hold out as long as you can, the deal will get better.

I was watching a video by Dennis Prager this morning on how many liberal millennials have bought into the whole climate change deal, to where they aren't saving up for a future they believe won't exist in 10 years.

    Just curious here.

Were you renting before you bought a house?

And if so, if you are renting while saving for the house would the rent spent not be just as expensive as the interest on a mortgage by the time $60k (for a small home) has been saved? Figuring city rent easily being $800 a month minimum and a few years to save...

I realize all of this is dependent on income, but often wonder how people save money by not buying a home when that likely means they are instead spending in a way that doesn’t get them any closer to home ownership.

Good lord what equipment are you wanting at $64k after discounts?

I’ve seen 1 ton diesels on the lot for 60K pretty regularly. I’d never buy one, especially when they are only good for 150k miles and have the nightmare gremlins of DPFs and DEF.

I just bought one last month, but before that I hadn’t had a vehicle payment for several years. I was amazed at the prices for pickups. A full size crew cab 4wd will run you almost $60k now. I bought one in 2011 that was $36k out the door, and had more options than I ever expected. I shopped around for a while and finally found a deal that was right for me. I went to the dealer to look at a used 2018 with 17k miles, but when I got there, the salesman showed me the last new 2018 crew cab 4wd they had in stock, and it was $15k off the sticker. After everything, it was $38,600 out the door.

TL;DR. Keep looking, the deals are there.

Having never owned one how did you obtain all the info? Surely not from the web?

That was me until the economy took a dump in '07. Then it all went bye bye.

Not something I am proud of but learned my lesson. My current truck (diesel) is almost at 150k and I am gonna run it until the wheels fall off.

No reason to bail on your truck at 100k (besides the fact it is a Chevy). Run it until the wheels fall off and save the cash for when it does.

This is the boat I am in. Renting but finally in a position to buy.

No sense paying rent until prices fall as that will cost me more in the long run.

May as well pay the higher price now and put the payments into my own place.
