I seriously cant see how the hell a man can get by without a chainsaw and welder...
I'm forever needing mine for different things..
    Cant imagine not owning either
I don’t have any trees big enough to need a chainsaw.

Chainsaws come in handy for other work, like a 27' X 20' deck I'm going to have to take down this coming cool weather time.

It's made of 2" X 6" planks and the C.S. will make much shorter work of it.

Though to be sure, some of the them I'll harvest whole for a few tables I plan to make. These planks I put in new only 2 years ago, so they're in very good condition. I'll be using my Skilsaw on them.....The rest are pretty weather worn and will be removed via my C.S. and a bit of grunt work....

I do have some very large oak trees. Heck, just pruning the limbs produce 10"/12" firewood size logs.

I heated my home in Oklahoma with wood that I cut during the summer months. I wanted the limb wood and swiped that from construction sites. The regulations wouldn't allow burning the wood piles, so there was plenty of wood available. Being thrifty, I was always trying to reduce the cost of chain saw maintenance, and sharpened a lot of chains.

Lesson learned: By the time the chain dulled, the bar was worn and the stretched chain tore up the sprockets at the bar tip and the clutch end. I was working full time and a lot of hours, so farting around with sharpening the chain was just wasted time. When the saw began to cause trouble, I trashed the forward parts and replaced it all in one operation.

If your making saw dust then you should become intimate with a rat tail file. Unless you enjoy wasted hours smelling burning sawdust, in that case drive on

I was working a ton of hours and money didn't mean a thing to me. I'd buy things like appliances and just stack the boxes in the spare bedroom- unopened.

Being thrifty got me to try sharpening the chains. Later, it just didn't matter.

Up to now, I have it done at a small shop, but the cost to do so, produces a less sharp than new blade, but yes, better than trying to use a dull blade.

The economics of having it done is almost not worth it compared to buying new or learning to do it myself. Not something I've ever been interested in, until lately.

    So, what do you do?

Have it done or do it yourself?

If you do it yourself, what do think the best tool to do is?

The Stihl 2 in 1 Sharpener or ...?

    Thanks!
    A file.

I built bird houses with chainsaw and a drill.

If you own a saw, you should have the round file to fit the chain and a flat file at least. I've set up my shop vice to go in a 2" receiver hitch so I can move it to any building I might need it or put it on the truck hitch or the tractor bumper. I can sharpen saws with out the vise but it is pretty nice to have, and it acts like counter weight on the front of the tractor as well. I'd rather sharpen the chain than change one out.

Even better, just KEEP it sharp. If you run one until it is dull, it is just as likely so hot it is RUINED as well as dull.

Yep. Run a file over every tooth a couple passes every time you use it and you will be throwing chips for life. That's all most of us who dont make a living with one will need.

Dead on about using a dull one. You can phuvk up the temper/hardness on the edge of the tooth where its probably just better to replace it.

Even a dull one can be put on backwards and it will make a good light thin metal saw. So you can keep them for that.

Proper size file is all I use.
It takes a little practice, but it's just as fast and gives a longer lasting edge than anything else I've used.

When I was able to use my chainsaws, I used to sharpen chain teeth with a rat tail bastard.....

All I have ever used is one of these. I don't use the saw much so it does the job.

Curious if anyone has tried one of these gadgets.
