You have any leverage as far as adjusting your times to beat traffic early/late? My Dad was good at his job and they gave him leeway. Just a thought.... pound that chest man.

Good point. I commuted 63 miles each way to downtown Dallas for almost 20 years until 2 years ago. 60 minutes in the morning and 80 minutes in the afternoon but I worked a 6am - 3pm shift. I knew people who came in at 9am from less than 20 miles away and would spend 1.5 hours each way.

Well, that’s not convenient to anywhere you’d like to live. On the NW side, Williamson County with easy access to MoPac or 183 is where I’d start. Your not far from a couple of outdoor ranges a little further north. Liberty Hill ISD if you can hack that commute.

Southwest, look somewhere off 71 in Hays County. Don’t know what ranges are around there.

Thank you. Is Liberty Hill ISD worth the distance?

Round Rock could be a contender maybe and it looks like the schools are decent.

I'm sure we will end up renting before buying but I'd like to try to avoid moving school districts if possible. The timing isn't so great for this with school starting in August so the less churn the better.

    Just say no.

Not an option I'm considering at this time. The opportunity is too good. You can remind me of that if I start complaining in a year. :)

Yes more than likely but that remains to be seen for sure. It's not a clock in/clock out type of job so that should be do-able. In reality I may not even be going into the office every day but instead traveling or visiting client sites.

But that said, the nature of the job is that public transit wouldn't work. I hate taking it anyway so no biggie for me either way.

Appreciate the advice, folks. Sounds like there are some shooting options out there so I won't totally be out in the cold. I am still in the process so this may all be for naught but I needed to get the research done now to make an informed decision. If an offer is to be made, I expect it will be in the next 2-3 weeks.

Best of luck. Hope the wind is in your favor.

    Austin - Rockdale
There is a good chance I will be getting a job offer and potentially it will be in Austin (Houston is the other likely location). While I'm waiting to find that out, I wanted to start looking at living there. I've been in the area some but don't know much about the best places to live and such.

Right now we're in a somewhat rural middle class suburb in Fort Bend county and I think we'd probably prefer that as opposed to living in the city.

Which areas/counties are the ones the avoid? My assumption is Travis county would be one.

What about ranges in the area? I prefer shooting outdoor if at all possible.

I'd appreciate any and all advice. :)
What part of town is the office located?

Depends on what you value and how your kids can adjust. Mine went from small schools/classes most of their life to a big school and were miserable.

Were it I, I would be in Liberty Hill, for a lot of reasons, not just the ISD.

RR is big school. Plus, you’re really going to want to research what the feeder plan is.

Oh yeah, be aware that Austin city limits cross into Williamson County. I

Remote work is good if you can get it. That may be an option for this job as well. If that's the case, I will be staying put but traveling up there a fair amount. Remains to be seen.

I recently moved to austin from cedar park. I don't have kids but heard that the leander isd was good.

The commute is going to suck no matter where you choose. My drive was from brushy creek, on 183, down to 38th st off mopac. 18 miles. Luckily I have to be at work by 0630. But even at that time more people were on the road every passing yr. I took the toll road because on the bike I could skirt the toll sensors. If you don't take the toll it adds quite a bit of time if you have to go to leander or liberty hill.

At 1600 get on google maps and map a trip from downtown to leander, round rock etc and check out the time it takes to make the trip.

Good point, I've done that quite a bit in the past. The Google maps tools makes it easy because you can predict times in the future but doing it live is always a bonus.

So this is right now. To go 19 miles to cedar park without taking the toll road. Keep in mind this is summer. Traffic is noticeably lighter during the summer months. Also, I lived off the first cedar park exit once you leave austin city limits.

    Cedar Park
I live near the Domain and work in Cedar Park which works out well for avoiding heavy traffic. In the morning when everyone is going into town I'm going out and when they're leaving I'm heading back in. I also go in a little earlier and get off at 3 which helps too.
