When was the last time you got the flu? I get colds for a day or two, allergies and runny noses. Never had a high fever or been bed ridden for days. Except for the time I got that flu shot... not saying the shot caused the flu. It didn’t but I tend to have an overactive immune system and I get reactions to vacations. So I don’t get flu shots. Or generally any other shots.

The older you get the more dangerous the flu can be for you. I would recommend anyone older than 50 should definitely get a flu shot every year.

    Out here by the lake!
Some of us worked in jobs were flu germs are more prevalent. Not to mention working were we didn't get sick days. I generally went to work sick, hoping my asshole boss would catch it & be as misserable as I was working.

I've not had one in years.

My doc told me to skip it. They prepare the vaccine expecting two or three specific strains of flu. Its almost always other strains that actually end up floating around. And if your vaccine didn't have one of the strains going around, it does you zero good.

Have not had one in 15 years. Had the flu maybe 4 times.

I don't think I've ever had the flu.
    If I have, I don't remember.

Of course, there's lots of things I don't remember....

    :green:

I remember as a kid getting sick almost every year along with my siblings. Throwing up, fever and the whole nine yards but it only ever lasted for 24 hours.
Not so much since flying the coop though.

I refused to take flu shot when they used to use a live virus. The new ones are not and the chances to have an adverse reaction are much slimmer. I get one every October. Haven't had the flu since but, then again, I no longer come in contact with hundreds of people a week like I used to and I am more conscious of hygiene, hand sanitization, etc. Plus, at my age, bad breath is enough to keep most carriers at arms length

OK, no flu shot for those who think it's bad.

Me, I get one every year.

Never said it was bad. Do whatever you want. Just pointed out my experience that the one time I get the flu was right after the one time I got a shot to prevent it. Coincidence? Maybe, but I doubt it.

I'll take my chances and be fine/fluless like I was for decades before.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread about washing your hands well and often. Also not touching your face, eyes, mouth helps too. Remember my kids' pediatrician telling me that's how he worked with sick kids all day every day and never got sick. I took it to heart and practice it and have hardly been sick since.....except for the one time I got a flu shot. Lmao...

I've read that the shot's effectiveness wears off over time. So the down side to getting it now means it may be too weak to do you any good in the late winter when the Flu is more common.

But if the season is starting early, maybe getting the shot early is the thing to do. If the shot does wear off or weaken 3/4 of the way through the season, does anyone know if you can get another shot or a booster to get you through the remaining portion?

    dsgrey,

    No, you mustn't do that.

Don't you know the medical profession is out to kill you?

Yes, I'm being a tad sarcastic after reading of all the mistrust of so many things medical.

Perhaps, given some folk's mistrust, going to a witch doctor or chanting incantations against bad juju would be more effective for them.

Now, we'll hear about how many and often mistakes are made by the medical field because we expect and deserve perfection in all things medical.

    It's only reasonable.
    Condescending snark. Wow.

No, not snark, a bit of truth telling satire

There are quite a number of folks who distrust and malign the medical profession in general.

    I'm not one of them.

My two closest friends are physicians. Eye surgeon and anesthesiologist. Both will tell you docs make mistakes. Some, more than others.

40 yrs ago I got my first flu shot. I was sicker than a dog for abt a week. I said never again. Then when I eased past 60 I noticed most folks dying from flu were old. Dr confirmed when older it really helps. Now I get one every year and seldom get any reaction, maybe a sore arm for a day or 2. Dr's office show the shots available next month and I will be there.

    birddog,

    Yes, they do.

    Some 'way' more than others.

Like you, I have friends in the medical profession.

One friend, a surgeon, told me while in med school they had an absolutely brilliant student with boards for hands.

The class as a group prayed he would go into research and not become a hands on MD.

Luckily, for the world he 'did' go into research.
