I applied for my Texas LTC today. I must say I was impressed by the computerized application process; it was user friendly, straightforward and mostly self explanatory. I've set up my fingerprint appointment for tomorrow. Since I applied as a retired LEO, the only potential fly in the ointment might be the good guy letter from my former agency. Mine is dated early 2012, shortly after I retired in 2011 and right after I won my battle against stage 4 throat cancer and was finally well enough to apply for a license to carry in NY. It was acceptable for NY and I hope it is acceptable here in light of it being that old. It would be a real pain in the butt trying to get another one since I have been retired 7 years and 10 months and the person responsible for giving me another one would be asking "Glenn who".

If you can’t renew online (I think it’s every other renewal has to be in person) then use this page to make an appointment.

TY! I do have to renew in person next year. I looked at the check list and I'm not sure if I need to take my birth certificate if I have a valid Texas drivers license. Also, I used to go to Corpus Christi and renew while visiting my dad. Much faster than trying to get it done in Houston. I was told by a co worker you cant do that anymore. Is this true?

You don’t. Next time you need a renewal make an appointment. They will get you in and out in a few minutes.
True but I don't have a star on my DL so tried to make an appointment one day online when I was off and there were 0 slots available. I think Gov. Recently chided DPS too over the long lines for renewals at the mega centers.
Maybe when I am in the country and pass a office, I will try again. It is like planning a vacation.

If you do not have the star in the gold circle in the upper right hand corner of your current DL, you will need to provide proof of citizenship with either a certified copy of your birth certificate (not the cute little one from the hospital with your tiny foot prints on it) or a valid passport. You can order a copy of your BC online for $22, but do it early. it takes 4-6 weeks to get it.

Beware, there are some websites that charge up to $75 for this service and claim to get it to you faster.

You can make an appointment same day only I think. You need to start as soon as it goes online at 7am. No choosing a time. You pretty much take what they give you. A cell phone with text capability is needed.

I guess the DPS is under staffed. At the new Georgetown location, they have about 16 stations available. The days I was there, the place was packed but they only had 2 stations manned the first time and 4 stations the second time. I was sent away the first time because I didn't have my birth cert.
