first off, I'm probably misspelling the word but I'm wanting to start a warning thread about food places that scam your cards.

I live in Cypress and have enjoyed many dinners at el jimador but a week ago last night I experienced $220 in fraud on my debit card. It hadn't been used out of my control for a month.

In talking to friends this doesn't happen in he chain stores. I dropped $259 on Pappadeaux for a business meeting with no fear or experience of getting my card scammed. Because heads would roll by the Pappas family!

I'm pretty sure my CC was compromised at Los Cucos here in The Woodlands.
They charged $1k at a hotel in Austin within 4-5 days of eating there.

It’s been a regular stop for a couple years with no issues.

I rarely use the debit card and I won’t anymore.

As a new arrival to the diabetic club Mexican food is pretty much off the menu.

My bank told me when they stopped a false charge on a card of mine: "Don't waste time trying to find where it was compromised..many times it can be months before the stolen info is used"

I took it as a friendly point of fact on their part and they did detect the attempt.
They were were triggered by very small out of the area charges that would indicate the account was active then large charges would follow.

Dont hand your card to the staff. They have all the info to use the card on line, which is how most people use the info because it somewhat insulates them from direct evidence they used the card, i.e. in store video.

The pros even hire people to receive the packages at a different location.

I knew exactly where my info was taken. It was used within minutes and I had a decent idea a waitress at Denny's did it because like an idiot I allowed her to run my check for me so "i wouldn't have to wait at the register" she said. Still I wasn't sure till the fraud investigator at chase let slip that they had several issues at Denny's. Oops she said were not supposed to tell folks this. I waited a couple months to give them time for further investigation, not that I think they would waste time on it anyways, before I talked to the Denny's manager. He was a bit shocked that I knew all this but said they fired a couple people for it already.

Anyways, debit cards have fraud protection and its usually the bank that catches the odd charges/attempts and freezes the account. My bank immediately reverses the charges and has never charged me the small amount that technically debit card users are liable for in certain instances. You cant bitch about that.

This crap is going to happen more and more as tech advances much faster than countermeasures can be developed.

**sigh** debit cards have federally mandated fraud protection too. If my card is lost or stolen and I report timely I am only out $50. If it is other fraud, like the OP experienced, I have zero liability and, I believe, 60 days to repor .

Of course, with a debit card I would be missing the cash until the fraud is resolve .

**sigh** and that’s why the fraud protection on debit cards is terrible

I learned the hard way, which is why I use credit cards, pay them off and earn cash back

Several years ago when money was very tight in my family, I had a retailer accidentally add a zero to the transaction. Unfortunately, I had used my debit card. The retailer immediately realized his mistake and tried to reverse the charges.

While the money immediately left my account, it took several days for the refund to be put back into my account. I contacted the bank and they were not helpful at all. We were going through a hard time then, so those days without access to our money were tough.

Now, I use credit cards. I travel all across the country for work and have my card number stolen at least once per year. With credit cards, it’s no big deal. They stop the fraudulent charges and next day me a new card.

I think it’s a really bad idea to use debit cards.
