Well, it's ~3.5 hours for me, though it took me 5.5 hours this time. I was on the road for an hour before I realized I had forgotten my CPAP machine so I had to go back home for it. Life sure is harder when you do stupid things. :)

As for your question, I'll start to balk at a 6 hour drive and if it's 8 or over I'll probably pass.

Others have also replied and I’ll answer to them accordingly.

That’s exactly the answer I wanted to see. At what point do people decide it’s not worth it. Texas is a huge state and how do we accommodate all of us. Ben, I will say there is a range closer to us that I would like to think would accommodate, though I don’t know.

I also know there are ranges south of DFW that have long ranges. And some just west of DFW. Obviously there are places out west, but how many of us would be willing to drive.

Personally, and I assure you I speak solely for myself, a full weekend would be most enjoyable. A place to camp and socialize and the next day hit the range would be an experience not soon forgotten. That may require someone’s lease or personal ranch. Or someone privy to such things. Perhaps a certain lawyer with access to such things who I have not previously had the pleasure of meeting.

Next time I'll bring a camera and actually take some pictures instead of half-assing it with my phone.

For now, though, I leave you with the weirdest picture I took. I stopped at a 7-11 on the way to the range and this pulled in next to me. It was wearing exempt plates so I assume it's some sort of official vehicle but just what in the name of all that is holy is the "Patriot Emergency Response Team"?

Pretty sure you’re on a list now.

Where did I put that hat made of thin sheets of aluminum?

If you have someplace in mind we'd love to hear it.

Post it here, start a thread, or PM me info if you want the planning committee to discuss it in private first.

But yeah, I think we all would like a little more freedom. Two problems to think about first though. Most ranges won't allow Tannerite or much less using it to blow stuff up. Second is if it's a deer lease the fall meet pushes close to hunting season.

The general location is an issue too. Moving any direction much adds to people's drive.

As far as direction, exactly why I posed the question.

Also, this time of the year directly impacts leases and hunting, that I understand. What is needed is a big enough piece of land to accommodate.

As far as things like Tannerite, yes, I can understand how and why that may be a challenge. In this great and beautiful state, with all of these varied members, it does seem possible that a place may exist. Where and how far a drive for the majority of the members to attend is the overwhelming issue.

Again, cost benefit ratio, fun to length of drive, is what will dictate the location and available activities.

Please don’t anyone think that I didn’t enjoy this past Saturday. I had more fun shooting a few guns and spending most time socializing than I have had in a longer time than I care to admit. What struck me more, was stories of old and the things that were enjoyed. I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen the machine gun shoot held at Knob Creek. In the greatest state in the Union, why is it not held here?!?!!

(The last part was a bit of comical rambling and pride for this state.)

That may require someone’s lease or personal ranch.
Interesting point. I note that most of the 1000-yard competitive shooting venues in the state are private ranges. They're not gun clubs nor are they open to the public. They're just ranges built by people with land who like to shoot at long range and socialize with others who share their interests.

Is there a TGT member, located roughly in the middle of the state, who would be willing to build a range on their land at their expense just to host a twice-a-year party? I dunno.
a full weekend would be most enjoyable
Given the right venue and structure of activities, I strongly agree.

Then why the exempt plates?...Incorporation to me means a business, Sum Ting Wong.
Yeah, that's why I posed the question in the first place. Having had a little time to think about it, though, I know of other examples of private groups being recognized as quasi-official NGOs and being given authority normally reserved for governments. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, for example, has an exemption carved out in federal law allowing them to receive, investigate, and retain obscene material. I've just never known such an organization that fielded their own official vehicles with exempt plates. I found that a little jarring.

It was previously mentioned that the area and range are due to proximity of people in the triangle of the three major cities. Even with that some had a pretty good drive.

Is there a number of hours folks are willing to drive? For those that don’t drive too far, what would that number be that would make it too far?

For those west Texas boys, would another hour or so for a better range be too much?

Got to thinking about what Dawico said about previous meets and some of the fun that was had. If there was a range that would allow it, or someone’s deer lease that could be used, what is the point it’s not worth the extra fun?
    Better range = weekend retreat

Vanguard is this coming weekend at Reveille Creek Ranch in Burnet. This is a huge facility that heppens to have a pretty awesome shooting facility as part of the ranch. The Reveille Creek Ranch Open PRS Bolt Series was a couple of weeks ago and was epic.

Maybe something could be structured with them as a semi-formal weekend event with camping, shooting, and training?

6 rv slots that are water/electric only doesn't do a thing for me. And you have to be signed up for one of the other activities, mountain biking, scuba diving, etc. No mention anywhere of the range facilities.
