I'm looking for good reasons to own a 1911, what are they?

I asked the exact same question before buying a 1911. Did not want to spend a ton of money just to find out why I should own one. Bought a full size Ruger SR 1911 and now understand the lure of the 1911. I am still a revolver fan but when going to the range for just smooth shooting I take the 1911. To tell the truth though I am not a very good shot (my wife is better) but I enjoy everything I shoot.

@Byrd666 What you need is a bull barrel 1911. With the captive spring system, there are no flying pieces. Now you have me curious, so when I get back home, I’ll try to disassemble one using only one hand. I believe it can be done.

So....Just out of curiosity, how many new cuss words have you come up with?

EZ to answer: Own a piece of history! Know that when it comes to push vs shove and you are out of bullets, you can beat the SOB into a bloody mess...one way or another when you pull a 1911 its business is sending a short note telling the other guy you mean business,,,

I am not about to read 13 pages of this to see if what I am about to say was already said or not; so, am just going to put it here: You don't have one = good enough reason to get one - since variety is the spice of life.
Mind you, even though I said the above and that is essentially why I bought a few of them, I likely would not choose to carry one for self-defense if there were other of what I believe are better options. I do carry a 45 but I much prefer a double action pistol with which I do not have to worry if I remembered to cock it or if already cocked did I remember to take off the manual safety or whether or not I am gripping it right to depress the grip safety and all that when a potential lose pucker factor type of situation suddenly arises to confront me. Yet, I do enjoy shooting 1911's and just owning them as well.

I suggest just getting one for your own enjoyment. Getting one for yourself, to enjoy it, is something you can appreciate for the rest of your life and if you have children, to whom you can leave your guns, they can continue to appreciate it after that.

    Want to be really cool?
    Uberti Schofield in 38 Special.
The N frame size .38/357 loader does work on the 38caliber Uberti Schofield.
    One handed/thumb opening.
Flip it over, move the barrel across your arm, shoulder, or tummy.
    Empties drop out.
Place the upright gun under your off arm, pull the speedloader, insert, push the button, Move the barrel back across your arm or tummy to close.
    BAM! Back in business.
Safeties? Safeties?!?!?! We don neeed no steeeenking safeties!

    My reasons to own 1911s
    1. Slim design
    2. Availability of holsters, magazines, springs, etc.
    3. Slim magazines
    4. Fairly easy to shoot well (subjective)
    5. Ergonomics
    6. Variety of effective chamberings
There are some cons as well, but its usually a 1911 style pistol in 45 acp that I have with me.
