Native Texans took me in and gave me a place to live. They are as much my family as my own blood and would give my life to protect them. I may not have been born here, but my attitude is Texan.

I am a native but I have lived in a few other states. Alot of good people have moved here but I think that it is harder for people that arent from the south / west or atleast a rural area to assimilate into the traditional Texan culture that I grew up in and still live everyday.

The big takeaway is if you come here, assimilate and dont expect us to cater to you or your way of doing things because I am not changing for anyone

A little funny. I went thru basic at Ft Ord, Ca. and was sent to Ft Gordon, Ga for AIT. One of the guys in our basic company had never been to Texas and a bunch of us were from Texas so naturally there was some bragging going on. I lived in DFW at the time and flew home then drove on to Ga. He was bringing his wife and driving from Ca to Ga. I told him when he got to DFW call me. He could have a place to stay, a meal, or just a pit stop with a shower. He did call and came by the house for an extended pit stop and shower. First words out of his mouth. "I thought all of that BS about Texas being big was just typical Texas bragging. I've been driving for over 8 hrs since I got into this state (El Paso) and have 3 more to go (Shreveport). It's huge". I just laughed. I don't remember where he was from but it was one of the Eastern states. I've heard you can go anywhere in the world and say you are from Texas and they will know where you are from. Name about any of the other states and you will have to explain it's in the USA.

I don’t know if it’s actually true, but the joke for Marine aviators going from Corpus Christi to San Diego is that half way point is El Paso. Think about it. You are going from Texas to California, half way across the country. Halfway into your journey, you’re still in Texas.

Again, never done the math but that’s the joke Marine pilots tell each other. True or not it keeps the legend alive about the size of Texas.

The Southern/rural part is absolutely true. Being from the Carolinas originally, with a very proud and well documented family history there, the lore of Texas and the freedom associated with is not hard to understand. Even from days of old, that’s what brought many Southerners to Texas. The independent spirit of Texas has always drawn those types of individuals here. I’m eternally thankful for my family’s roots in SC, but Texas will always be the place that feels like home.

I always loved visiting South Carolina, very friendly people and plenty of our nations history to explore.
Some of the best meals I've ever had were at RB's on Shem Creek in Mt Pleasant. Fresh seafood right off the boat and into the kitchen. Wonder if RB's is still there.
