Grew up right next to it. Didn't know either.

Went to Air Base Defense school at Camp Bullis in 1974. We lived in tents and were all alone. All our training materials were Army. It was not a fun time. Did not know the great history.

I knew it was named after him, as I've spent a lot of time on there; but I didn't know his story in this detail.

Anyone who has been on Bullis and recognized the "Stone House," Bldg 5908, which sits just up the hill to the left as you drive through the main part of the base, here is the history behind it...

A plaque on Building 5908 reads "Erected 1931 for Brigadier General Halstead Dorey by Enlisted Me 23rd Infantry." The building was not the creation of the Quartermaster Corps but of two lieutenants, R.I. Vittrup and Paul Hamilton, who used some of their free time to build themselves a stone house after tiring of a life in tents. During the day, the lieutenants would divert a few loads of stone and other materials to the house site. After supper, enlisted men of the 23rd Infantry worked on the construction. When the house was completed, General Dory decided to assume control of it for use as his quarters. The two lieutenants thus remained in their tents at the end of the officers' line where they could view their masterpiece from afar.
