Is that not precisely what Austin is attempting to do with the dissemination of accurate information.

It will, in all likelihood, be a model for our state to follow.
Our state is certainly one of the worst in our nation.

No. Austin is attempting to put more parental duties in the hands of the government.

Nothing in the curriculum you posted does what I said. It simply caters to an irresponsible community.

I would like to see the breakdown of ethnicity of the unwed mothers and especially the second time (third, fourth, and up) unwed mothers. I know what I witnessed working in the AA community. And it doesn't stand for All-American.
I was referring to the early sexualization of young girls in the Latino community........not the AA

I have spent lots of time in Latin America........married two lovely Latinas (not at the same time......lol)......the culture is.......well....lets just say......highly sexualized for young girls.

I was hesitant to point something out that seems obvious because it will be something many will find disagreeable.

    https://powertodecide.org/what-we-do/information/national-state-data/teen-birth-rate

The teen pregnancy rate clearly parallels conservatism in the 50 states in the US map in my link.

Bible Belt conservative states clearly have the highest rates of irresponsible sexuality as evidenced my the teen pregnancy (and abortion) rates.
Careful who you get your information from. Meet Ginny Ehrlich founder of Power To Decide and also part of the Clinton Foundation:

Maybe you could find something less biased, like the Southern Poverty Law Center.

~20% of Texas teen pregnancy's were to second-time-moms.
Let's appropriate some state funding to get those irresponsible women some form of LARC (google it).

WHOAAAA......if that is true (I don't doubt you) that is a stunning statistic. I have feeling that it is due to some "cultural factors" here in Texas.

    "Appropriate some state funding? Eh?"

May be LIBERATE some "state funding" from those who stole it and give it back to the rightful OWNERS, those who EARNED IT.

This is something parents should be teaching. Not schools. Failure of some parents does not make it the responsibility of the school....k

Our society recognizes, in most cases, that trained subject matter experts those are best skilled to provide education.

Your talking about 8-13 year olds. This isn't about abstinence, or contraception. This is about indoctrination into gender studies and whom a school believes your children should be. It's the parents responsibility to teach morals in a child to shape who they are, it's the schools responsibility to provide the tools to become successful in the workforce when they become adults.

Agree 100%, though "indoctrination" is an unnecessarily inflammatory term as was the deceptively and erroneously hyperbolic initial title to this thread.

The acute reporting that precipitated this thread is about grades 3-8 and the content seems pretty reasonable as seen in the re-posted bullet points from the approved curriculum (below).

This is all quite timely a discourse, as out state is about to review the k-12 sexuality education for the first time in a decade and a half.

I would hope that our state's professional educators will find it their responsibility to attempt to intervene in Texas' shamefully teen pregnancy and birth rate by providing an education to our students. Irresponsible sexuality, in all likelihood, is in part due to our bible belt conservatism that has inhibited dissemination of accurate sexuality information. Educators and parents may both be to blame.

    ......................................

The new curriculum is broken down by grade level and includes the following:

    Third:
    ● Identify male and female external reproductive anatomy
    ● Identify trusted adults to talk to about sexual orientation
    ● Demonstrate and promote dignity and respect for all people

    Fourth:
    ● Describe male and female reproductive body parts and their functions
    ● Identify trusted adults to talk to about teasing, bullying and sexual abuse
    ● Demonstrate refusal skills and “no” statement

    Fifth:
    ● Describe — medically — the male and female parts and function in pregnancy and reproduction
    ● Define sexual orientation and romantic attraction
    ● Define teasing, sexual harassment, bullying

    Sixth:
    ● Differentiate between and explain expressions of gender
    ● Communicate respectfully about gender identities and sexual orientations
    ● Describe the advantages and disadvantages of communicating through technology
    ● Describe strategies to use social media safely, legally and respectfully
    ● Explain personal rights as to touches
    ● Define sexual intercourse, human reproduction, sexual abstinence, pregnancy prevention
    ● Define STDs and HIV

    Seventh:
    ● Communicate effectively to maintain abstinence and use of contraception including condoms
    ● Explain health benefits, risks, effectiveness, of contraception
    ● Describe symptoms of pregnancy and healthy pregnancy practices
    ● Examine influences and how risk behaviors affect sexual behavior

    Eighth:
    ● Describe the situations and impact of bullying, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, incest, rape and dating violence
    ● Explain why people are not at fault for being victims
    ● Identify resources about prevention and reproductive health care and emergency contraception
    ● Identify pregnancy options, safe surrender policies and prenatal care

Sounds to me like a school saying that they can do parenting better.

All you have to do is look at the history here in the U.S. and see that it was these types of programming in government and schools that led to the degradation of the family unit.

Not teaching one particular form of contraception (and a stupid one at that) is not going to be the difference between a responsible and irresponsible choice.

Your attempt to disqualify parents from the ability to raise their own children as they see fit due to lack of knowledge about an obscure form of “contraception” is ignorant at best.

    .................................

Failure to teach kids about sexuality is no failure.

That would depend on the individual family and their circumstances.

It is, most often, just not in parents' skill set.

If the parents managed to have kids, then they know how it works. Everyone knows about condoms and every other mainstream form of birth control. But it is also up to THE PARENTS discretion if they choose to teach only abstinence to their children. It is not up to the state to override that decision.

Why should we presume teaching sexuality to be different than teaching geometry?

Sex is something natural. Algebra is not. There is not a text book worth of formulas needed to calculate whether of not you are having sex. Algebra has nothing to do with personal urges. It’s unrelated to personal belief systems. There are no opinions when a formula is correctly worked out. It is right or wrong.

The idea that someone with different beliefs and opinions than the parent can teach something that doesn’t have specific “right and wrong” answers is foolish.

Trained educators are required. I do agree with you.

No, you don’t. I do not believe a state trained educator is required or should be included in my children’s education on sexual activity. I do not believe the state knows better than I do. I don’t believe the state knows better than someone who chooses a different path than me either.

Schools should not be teaching kids how to ****. We do not agree.

I said nothing about appropriation of state funding.....it was included as part of my re-quote of an earlier post about the 20% staticstic....which I found alarming.

What I really find amusing is the liberal "belief in science" yet promote the belief of multiple human genders, other than male, female and hermaphrodite. If you "feel" like you are something else, then your body is out of balance hormonally. This could be environmental factors, diet or simply a genetic issue where the body produces a deficit in the male or female hormones. This does not change your biological, genetically determined sex via your XX, XY.

They only wish to engender confusion, and disunity.

That statement is your subjective opinion too. No more factual than what you disagree with.

As a former teacher and administrator in a middle school and high school I can only conceive of what AISD is doing as total bullshit. That curriculum is NOT what should be taught in public schools. The responsibility of teaching children (yes, that's what they are) about sex and procreation falls upon the parents, not the public schools. If that was going on when my children were going to public school, they would have either been home schooled or attended private school.

That school board is elected. So the parents, by democratic action, by that I mean by electing these Board members, have chosen to have the school help them out with teaching this to their children. As HKShooter65 pointed out, this is not what the protesters made it out to be.

The number and percentage of children who are sexually abused in their home by a relative is horrifying. These children are kept under a strict code of silence that isolates them from reaching out for help. Programs like this can help a child understand what is happening to them is not right, and that they can get help.

As it is, I think many children get their sex-ed in a tent on a Boy Scouts outing, or with a couple of friends looking at a Playboy mag they managed to get a hold of. For girls, it is with Barbies, the one girl who has been inappropriately exposed to sexual behavior using Barbies to show the other girl what sex is like. I am sure what I have just written turns your stomach. It turns mine, but it is the truth of what happens to a major portion of our children.

As a former employee of a small PD, I personally witnessed a case in which a number of witnesses came forward who saw a grandfather groping his 11 or 12 year old grand daughters in public. I guess he must have been going senile. But the girls acted like it was normal. The Sergeant over the shift found out who the old man was. He happened to be related to one of the PDs brass. So he was trying to sweep it under the rug, to get the witnesses to go away without taking their statements. I went straight to the Chief who took care if it. But this stuff is real. It is happening to a lot of kids. Some of them are home schooled.

So you may not like it, but Austin parents do. So let Austin parents decide the kind of education their children receive.

It seems a good thing to me that the School is teaching the value that the individual should get to decide who does what with their body, as well as how to know someone is trying to abuse them.
