    Anybody else have one?

I posted awhile back about needed hip replacement. Well, this Thurs I have a full day of sedation dental work scheduled because I am a wuss when it comes to the dentist. Really only one major issue to take care of before surgery, but I figured that if I was going to do that, I might as well do EVERYTHING at one time. Some missing fillings, one small cavity, deep clean, and a root canal (or if it can't be saved, extraction and bone graft for future implant). Wish me luck....I am sweating about it already.

    Hip replacement on 12/18.

Anybody done sedation for dental work? Did it make it easy? Recovery?

I think @TX OMFS knows something about dental phobias.

yep....reached out to his office.......they do more serious maxillo facial surgery than I need.....they could not help........in my case.........root canals and general dentistry is not what they do.

A lot of what I need is cleaning and filling replacement one root canal.........I got blown off and referred to general dentistry.

My wife is a hygienist and is from a whole family of dentists. I'm trying to keep my crown as their worst patient at her office. I frigging hate it. She however is beyond good at her job. You want a general dentist and a hyena who loves scalings? Pm me.

What office are you going to? I work for a company that virtually plans implant placement, 3d prints surgical guides and makes provisional (temporary) restorations. If they happen to use our company maybe I will come across your case.

I'm a specialist so I don't offer cleanings, root canals, fillings, etc. We do surgery, most with deep IV sedation or general anesthesia.

Been meaning to make a video about sedation. Sedation is just like alcohol. You drink 1 beer or 24 beers and the effects will be different. Most dentists are only allowed to give up to moderate sedation which is a nice drunk but you're still arousable & mostly coherent.

The OP will have moderate sedation with Versed & fentanyl. It's not common to put someone very deep with only Versed & fentanyl. It's also difficult to keep someone very deep, meaning unarousable & without reflexes, for hours with only Versed & fentanyl. You can have light to moderate sedation with pills as well.

If you to truly be "knocked out" with no memory or awareness now you're talking deep sedation & general anesthesia. The best way to keep someone that deep for long periods, hours, is with anesthetic gasses in an OR.

Just like drunks, some people fight & some people cry under moderate sedation. You either have to put people deeper or let them wake up a little if that starts happening.

Last thing is safety. You want doctors that practice emergency drills & staff that have a clue. The general public isn't going to know how to tell if someone is safe. If a dentist brings in an anesthesia doctor to sedate people I would want it to be an MD. Another option is a surgery center with a real OR. A few dentists have privileges to work in an OR.

Greg Baber in Uvalde is a general dentist with full hospital privileges. He can treat you in a hospital OR while you are totally out. No twilight sleep, we're talking the real deal.

I was under anesthesia when I got my wisdom teeth out while in the USAF. I hit on the dental assistant and became violent when the wouldnt let me walk to the car or drive home. I also demanded my friend stop by Burger King to get a burger. I chewed a nice hole in my cheek and had fun irrigating burger out of my sockets. In short make sure someone whomever goes with you can handle/take care of you.

I used to be fine with the dentist, but the past few years it has become a real struggle. I thought about asking the dentist if they can prescribe a "happy pill" to get through the procedure. When they get done with even a cleaning, I feel like I ran a marathon.

    Mohawk600,

Truth is that I certainly DO after a "bush dentist"/"butcher" OCONUS, who pulled 2 molars with a shot of (TERRIBLE) Scotch as an "anesthetic". = HURT like H.

Yikes. Mine were relatively uneventful, I did my wisdom teeth under a local too. Lowers were impacted, that was neat experiencing how much force it took to break them. Pretty darned loud in your head when they snap. My g/f at the time was a dental assistant, she's the one who clued me in that a tea bag will help clot a wound. I had a bleeder that just didn't want to stop on its own.
