Your attempt to disqualify parents from the ability to raise their own children as they see fit....

The idea that someone with different beliefs and opinions than the parent can teach something that doesn’t have specific “right and wrong” answers is foolish. ....

No, you don’t. I do not believe a state trained educator is required or should be included in my children’s education on sexual activity. ...

Yeah, Younggun. Don’t let someone else tell your children about their bodies. Quit taking them to doctors, cuz parents know what is best for their children and can just doctor them at home. Plus, it’s cheaper too!

My son, mid 1996, when he was 10 years old learned about enhancing blowjobs with Altoids from the mainstream media reporting on Monica Lewinski.

Like it or not our kids get a much earlier and a much more explicit media and internet education than we might imagine or condone.

I'll observe that maybe 1/4 of parents are capable of teaching 6th graders basic algebra.
I'll, similarly, observe that no more than 1/4th of parents are comfortable and capable of teaching sexuality to their middle schoolers.

Just last week I spoke, in a professional capacity, to a mother who was aghast that one of her daughters 7th grade friends was caught receiving cunnilingus from a classmate in a bathroom stall.
These kids need responsible, age appropriate, accurate information. Most parents are woefully unprepared to provide such an education at home.

The Austin proposed curriculum seems fair and balanced and appropriate for our societal needs.

I could be wrong, though I thoroughly doubt it.

Your post was carefully thought out, well informed, respectful, and powerful.

I've been welding for 44 years. In that time I got a degree in welding and was a welding supervisor. That qualified me to teach welding technology.

Who is teaching these children this so called sex education? What qualifies them to teach it? Who determines a person is qualified to teach this?

How did I or children before I was a child get through life without this so called education? Did I learn about things other than teachers or parents informing me? Certainly, and many things that I'm sure my parents wouldn't approve of, but it was my parents raising me that decided how I would process such information, not indoctrination that some teacher would decide how I should view such things. If you need someone to raise kid, get a nanny, not some gender studies graduate.

Excellent question. Here is the answer.
School Boards, School Administrators, curriculum designers usually have 10 years of post high school education, training, and practical internships and supervised work to qualify them for the things you are inquiring about.

As it is, I think many children get their sex-ed in a tent on a Boy Scouts outing, or with a couple of friends looking at a Playboy mag they managed to get a hold of. For girls, it is with Barbies, the one girl who has been inappropriately exposed to sexual behavior using Barbies to show the other girl what sex is like. I am sure what I have just written turns your stomach. It turns mine, but it is the truth of what happens to a major portion of our children.
I've been called upon to do computer forensics for parents who suspected their kids were involved in something counterproductive. I stopped doing that work a long time ago because the images I found were too much for me to bear.

Thus, from my perspective, your statement is incredibly, almost unbelievably quaint. It's almost 30 years out of date.

Kids today, IMO, tend to get their earliest form of a sort of sex education by clicking on a link. They are immediately shown various body parts being forced into other body parts. Online porn is so pervasive, so easy to get, that I'd be surprised to meet a 12 year old who hadn't seen enough of it to know far more about the way things work mechanically than I knew by the time I concluded college.

Dionysius, what else do you 'feel' is superior?

Let me guess: communism, social justice propaganda and as a woman you refuse to shave your legs or armpits, rural people are evil and believe legal, sustainable weed production is a noble goal?

Just to mention a few things in your beloved bailiwick.

Oh, and guns are bad, mkay?

Without liberals, many US children would still be working in sweatshops. We would most of us be working 80 hours a week and still not able to feed our families. Most property in the US would be owned by a few giant monopolies (sound familiar?). We would stil be drinking from water fountains and relieving ourselves in bathrooms and sending our children to schools for the “white” and the “colored” (I remember those from my childhood). Our retired parents (and our retired selves) probably wouldn’t be able to afford medical care. Our bosses could force us to have sex with them or be fired, and we would have no legal recourse or protection.

It goes on and on my friends. I mean it when I call you friends. These days our nation has been divided in two with each side pitted against the other, each side thinking the other to be ignorant, immoral, wrong-headed, and more. This division and acrimony was created by big monied interests to distract us all from what they are doing, to give them a free hand.

Let’s call that Deep Capitalism. Oh, I hear you. You are rolling out the C word, or the S word. Well, just because you know that wealthy people are treating you as a pawn in their chess game doesn’t make you a Communist or Socialist.

Both sides need the other to keep this country from running into a ditch. Both sides bring good things to the table. Both sides bring bad things to the table. People have spent a lot of time talking to conservatives and to liberals. They found, )big surprise!) that there is a difference in the way they think and approach problems and the world. That means, that each side sees some things in the other’s blind spot.

Congress used to be better at getting things done by letting both sides have some say in what they were doing. Now, it is whichever side is in power does whatever they have to do to crush the other side. The whatever they have to do is becoming visibly, publicly, increasingly against our public values and our laws. Each side tolerates their own scoundrels, while yelling “Foul!” at the other side’s scoundrel.

So we have worse and worse scoundrels running things.

When was the last time you listened thoughtfully to the opinions of someone on the other side? When was the last time you heard a talking head saying something other than partisan propaganda? When was the last time you saw your own political party policing their own bad actors?

It is not really that the other side has crossed the line of immorality and paralytic partisanship, it is that BOTH sides have and that while this paralysis has us in it’s grip, the super rich are getting super richer. The problems is when each side tolerates their own scoundrel because, at least they are not the other parties scoundrel.

If we want to have a well run country again, like the one that built our interstate highways, build our damns and bridges and tunnels and electric grid, we are going to have to start policing our own scoundrels. Remember the parable in the Bible about the mote in the other fellow’s eye, and the beam in your own? That is what is going on right now in our country.

So for goodness sake, don’t just demonize the other guy, try working with him, or her. Did you know that AISD built in an OPT-OUT OF SEX ED option? So you want a parent to have the right to teach their children, or not, about sex and not the School District.

OK , request granted. You have it your way. A parent has the right to do that in Austin. So what are you really complaining about?

Please, explain what your background is that makes you so qualified to presume children should be indoctrinated into sexual discourse in a classroom setting rather than taught by parents? Certainly there are bad parents, but a school is not a substitute for parenting.
