Been seeing ads for this, does anyone have an experience with this particular target system?

While it appears to be ingeniously simple, I wonder if it wouldn't be even easier/cheaper to make your own similar set-up...

I would probably be cheaper to make your own if you had a cutting torch and a welder. And could certainly be done at the ranch (friends ranch in Mt. Home) while enjoying liquid refreshment. We've made similar small targets in the past.

That approach works, but my current understanding (I'm by no means a metallurgy expert) is that the hard part is maintaining hardness of the metal while making the cuts/welds/etc., and I doubt a home-made version would hold up as well unless the proper tools were used (e.g. torch or plasma cutter weakening the metal and making it less impact-resistant).

Most inferior target stands tend to get chopped up pretty quickly it seems, and damaged plates can be dangerous...

Just my take, others may have an alternate perspective...

Certainly could be the case with a lot of the stuff we do at the ranch ............ but, if one swinging target gets messed up (usually takes a least a couple of years), we just weld it back together or make another. And we don't shoot targets during deer season and make trips out there maybe an average of once a month in the months we do shoot. We got some 1/2" plate from somewhere and it takes a while to mess that up at 100 yds.

At that price point, I'd say go for it. $150 for the big kit. AR500 targets, quick assembly/teardown and if you shoot a leg off... you can just get some more conduit.

Not bashing anyone that disagrees.... but, AR500 targets are not cheap. That $150 set is a good buy
For 1/4" thick targets? I disagree but also know I can build a hanging stand and hangers much cheaper than that.

    I posted a sale in the good deal thread a while back and got 6- 6"x 3/8" and 2- 4"x 3/8" targets for $60.

^very true, and if you've got the space to make that work, I can easily see that being a good solid approach.

^was looking at that again, and seems like those tubes may not hold up so well over time.

Personally, I've never had generally commercially available targets (e.g. stuff from Amazon, Academy, Cabelas, etc., etc.) last, especially when you're not the only one shooting at them...

Only ones that have ever held up over time for me are both the ones I mentioned previously, as well as these next ones from same place, which seem to be holding up forever (this uses rebar as someone else mentioned; easy to keep an extra length, though haven't ever needed one):

I bought a target stand with square tubed legs several years ago at a gun show. I think the second time I used it I hit the top of one of the legs and pretty much rendered it useless, which is why this one is appealing to me (just replace it with more 1" metal conduit).

I really don't have the means to build my own stand but I know it can be done cheaper than what these are selling for. It's a simply design and relatively inexpensive, I only wonder if I buy straight from the source I forgo the shipping costs as I do with Amazon Prime. I like the Defender kit better than what is being offered on Amazon as well, but the clock is ticking on that deal so I have to decide quickly...

We Hoosiers call those "junk swing sets" and get them for 10 cents a pound at the recycling center. The hooks cost the same, make those out of rebar I get a Lowes lumber.

Need a cheap stand? Easy peasy.

Find a free trampoline. You know, the one missing all the springs that someone just wants gone.

Take a leg section and flip it over. Turn the round sections perpendicular to keep it standing.

Find some rebar pieces (or whatever you want to hold the targets) and hang them. They usually have some pieces to throw away at a jobsite or buy some at the hardware store.

The old matt makes a good brass catcher btw.

    Done.
