An AK style rifle has been on my wish list for a while and I have been looking pretty hard the last couple weeks hoping for a good deal around the holidays. Only problem I’m having now is, after watching several videos and reading different reviews, I don’t know what to believe! One review says WASR’s are garbage and the next says they’re great entry level rifles. The Zastava ZPAP is another one I looked at. Not sure who or what to believe!

I don't have any experience with the ZPAP, but Zastava rifles are usually pretty good. I do own a WASR though and it has also been a great rifle. I would lean towards the WASR myself. Or spend a little more and get into an Arsenal. I definitely would be watching the AKOU videos on both to help me decide.

Although I didn't end up either (I went with the M+M M10x), I did a lot of research on those two. There were some failures in the 2000 round test with the WASR, and none that I found on the ZPAP. The NPAP on the other hand, there were many problems.

Unfortunately, the consistency in the builds of mass-produced AKs has fluctuated over the years. For one, early WASRs were great deals, then they tended to get sloppy. Not sure about the most recent production, but given the increase in price (about double of what they used to be), I would research them carefully before buying sight unseen.

Zastavas as the same way, they too went through a period with questionable quality (NPAPs mainly, but also some OPAPs), but again I cannot tell you what the current crop are like.

I would be wary of US-made Kalashnikovs, the Century ones have had problems. I would steer clear of any RAS-47s, and even the C-39 even though I have an early one and love it; but the bolts were questionable and could do damage to the receivers and carrier channels. Many avoid them altogether but mine is a great shooter. I just need to put a Bulgarian bolt carrier in it; but it's very accurate (for an AK) and while it's showing some early signs of internal issues, I believe it will be OK once I get the new bolt into it.

So, as I stated, it's up to the individual rifle; but Jim Fuller probably provides the best advice on what to look for when buying an inexpensive (relatively speaking) AK...

    Fwiw I have a Yugo m70. It's built like a tank!!!
I've had the opportunity to handle Romanian, Chinese, and polish AKs. As long as you put your hands on the one you want, and not just but but from online out of a crate, you should be ok, at least in my experience. YMMV

I have an Arsenal SLR95 I am going to be selling soon if you are interested

I’m way over my “gun budget”, and an Arsenal may be outta my league price wise, but you’d be surprised at how creative I can be when it comes to justify buying a gun!

    I have a Romanian WASR 10/63-mv that I have had since 2009
and it has been a great rifle . I have never had any problems with it
and have put a lot of rounds threw it.
It also came with the Tapco G2 trigger really nice and smooth.

I had two WASRs, but never shot them. Sold the 7.62, and still have the 556. I saved it for a guy who wanted to buy it, then he never came around.

I had a Romanian WASR 10. It was okay, I'd say not bad at all except at I had a problem with the back of the receiver cover splitting (easily replaced but the original was very thin). I got myself a Century Arms AK model C39v2, manufacturer's number R12399N, with milled receiver and Magpul MOE furniture. I like it better than I did the WASR 10; although I wish I had gotten the same model with walnut furniture (just a personal choice). It has a much nicer trigger than did the WASR 10, a milled receiver, and is made completely in the USA. After I got the Century Arms AK, I sold the WASR 10. Either would be a good first choice, I think. The Century Arms AK cost me $644.43 out the door in an online purchase; although, the price has gone up considerably (around $100 or more) since I purchased it in August 2019.

I justified a polymer 80 build 2 weeks ago. I had kind of wanted a Glock, but didn’t really “need” another handgun, and couldn’t afford it anyway. So I decided to just chill, and wait a while and maybe I’d find a good used one. Then I got to thinking that a polymer 80 would be a good compromise. The kit (frame and jig) was on sale for $114, so it wasn’t much money, and I could wait on the barrel and slide until I recovered from the Black Friday massacre my bank account took. It only took me 24 hours after ordering the frame before I had ordered a slide and barrel and 4 magazines if I would have bought the damn Glock new the day I started “thinking about it” I would have saved a hundred dollars probably!

I've heard that the Palmetto State Armory AKs are good now. The Gen 1s had some issues.

It's kinda hard to believe that so many places can eff up an AK, yet even the cheapest ARs seems to work just fine.

Bought a WASR 10 about a decade ago thinking it would be good to just have one. Never fired it for some reason. Just sits there. Not really sure if I'm going to end up keeping it, or put 'er up for sale. Been debating with myself on it, and lately thinking that I'll now wait 'til after the November elections. Might just come in handy yet...

In a SHTF situation, .223/5.56 & 7.62x39 will probably be the most sought after cartridges, I would hold onto it just to have an excuse to stock up on that cartridge.
