You're making more assumptions than me. If 3 won't do it then you are in spray and pray mode. Ask the guy in White Settlement how many shots it takes. Okay 2 guys in attack mode, first 2 shots takes out guy 1,. What are odds the other is going to stick around for his dose. Game over. Same for 3 or more. Pop the closest with the first shot and odds are the rest are gone. You're dealing with a criminal element, not a combat platoon.

It's like the old gunfighters (and new ones) say. It's not who is the fastest on the draw but who is most accurate with the first shot.
Can't recall who it was know, but one of the famous gunfighters always said "It is not the first shot that wins the gunfight, it is the first hit."

Everyone has to weigh the probabilities and find their comfort point with regards to how many rounds. Otherwise, we would all be lugging drum mags around. And several guns as well.

While I agree, are you saying bad things can't happen in "good" places?
Not at all, but one can't be totally prepared for every situation that can possibly come. Although I do carry an extra magazine (at times it's in my car), I would look to get out of a shootout rather than maintain one.

So do you carry a gun that only has 2 or 3 rounds in it?

Just because one guy was able to drop a bad guy with one shot, doesn't mean that will always happen.

We are talking about pistols here, there are LOTS of cases where people take 4 or 5, even more COM hits and keep on trucking

Ask any halfway decent instructor why they don't teach students to just pop a target 1 or 2 times.

The funny thing is that when people start arguing about stats about how many rounds you carry, they ignore that the vast majority of people don't carry at all, including many LTC holders, and they quite often go through their entire life not needing a gun.

So why carry a gun at all? After all, the overall rate of crime has been trending downwards.

If more is always better, why not carry four or five guns and a few hundred rounds? After all, if one is to be prepared for any eventuality.

You think you need a certain number of rounds to be comfortable based on what you perceive is the risk probability. That is great. Nobody is telling you what to carry.

Someone else looks at the probabilities and is comfortable carrying less. This does not mean they are wrong, it means they weigh the probabilities and risk differently.

You are comfortable with 9 mm (in fact, you think 9 mm is the ultimate and most effective self defense round, based on your own posts). Others disagree with that choice and would criticize you in the same manner that you are criticizing folks for carrying fewer rounds than you think are needed. So what?

No one on this board, including you amazingly, is omniscient.

All I know is back in the late '80s when I studied this crap. 80%+ of LE fired shots missed.
Plastic fantastic wonder 9s were just becoming the thing.
More capacity equals more misses and maybe more hits from dumb luck.
Only important take away, if you need a gun have one.
And for God's sake, know how to employ it.

    That place east of Waco....
CLARIFICATION: I did not say that every gunfight will be ended with 2-3 rounds. But, the first 2-3 rounds will do a lot to determine where the fight goes. If those rounds make meaningful hits, you might not need more....or you might need more. If they miss, you will definitely need more. If those rounds go into one of multiple perps, history tends to lean toward the remaining perps evacuating the area (see Active Self Protection channel). In rare cases, you may need more to defend from a concentrated wave assault from multiple attackers....though you will likely run out of time before you run out of attackers or ammo.

I rotate carry guns....a 5-rd. 9mm revolver, a 7-rd 9mm auto, or a 10-rd .45ACP. Whatever I choose that day, I will focus on making those first 2-3 rounds count. The rest will depend on what happens next.....

I feel bad for all the guys on here that live in Beirut and have to lug so much gear. In small town Texas some punk at a 7-11 or homeless guy at an ATM is probably the biggest threat you're likely to face. Maybe we need to go out in squads to Domino's!

That said I do carry a backup just in case...
