I hate property tax. I really hate it. I will never own my house nor will my kids. If we ever fail to pay Uncle Sugar his tax it will be taken at gunpoint and sold, literally, on the courthouse steps.

Any ideas to get rid of it?

My first thought is get rid of it, cut the budgets to where they should be, and re-evaluate. Even our beloved red state pays for too much unnecessary crap. I'd rather pay a sales tax, which I can avoid by not buying stuff, than to rent my property from the government.

Buying property to live on that can be ag exempt helps, but it still requires property tax of some kind. 50 acres in Red River County costs around $60 per year in property taxes.

Where you live has a big effect on how much you pay. As mentioned, ag exempt goes a long way in reducing the bill, but they usually make you carve out the house and an acre or two and pay regular taxes. But without city taxes, it ain't too bad. Still rent, but cheaper rent.

School taxes are my biggest hit. My baby girl is 30. Between that and the crap they preach (not teach) at school these days, that pisses me off more than what the county wants for taxes.

You could serve a couple of years if your young enough. Tax exemptions on the property you reside if your a Texan that is. Also based on disability rating. Go in break a leg for ole uncle sam and be permanently disabled to get a tax exemption.

Hell, I am still of the opinion that non-property owners should not be able to vote, especially when it comes to increasing proprty tax, bonds that impact property tax, or rent control!

So renters are not paying the property tax in the form of a percentage of rent?

Be careful creating classes that fit YOUR specific situation. Because you can be classed right out of voting too.

How much of a cut did the ISD take?

More than anything else, that’s the one the bothers me the most. There’s plenty of folks paying for those goods and services and they’ll never utilize them.

I don’t believe the individual ISDs should have the power to tax, as I believe the power of taxation is purely a governmental power that should not be delegable nor extendable to non-government entities.

In the grander sense, what does a reinvention of funding public goods and services look like?

OK, how about if you don't pay any income tax you can't vote? I'll be happy to be classed out of the vote if I can skip income taxes.

Property taxes ain't shit compared to what they take outta my paycheck.
Just be glad you're in Texas and not a state with income taxes.

    No kidding.

One reason we left CO was the state income tax. While I was exempt as a military member, my wife’s income wasn’t. Doing the math, it just wasn’t worth it.

Though our property tax was quite low compared to Texas (for a comparably valued home the amount we paid was about half of what we pay in Texas), the state took a 5% cut off gross income. When you add the income and property haircuts, it would exceed my Texas tax obligation by 40%.

And there’s still sales tax, that can go as high as 11% once every gets their cut.

BTDT, got the eff out. Even with the obscene amount I pay on property taxes, my overall tax burden is still lower. I like not being punished for making more money. Well at least by the state.
