Don’t forget the crying, “safe spaces” and attending psychologists after the last presidential election LOL

And that reminds me...when Obama won his first term, we had a handful of black employees running around the agency, rolling up on people and proclaiming in their faces “thanks white people!”...and this was not discouraged.

That sounds like a civil lawsuit waiting to happen. If someone did that to me, Id probably throw them down a flight of stairs by their cornrows.

I think it was you telling me about the crying rooms that a former employer of yours set up after the election lol

The second, Sam Walton, yeah I know, did it right. When he started he put two things first, his customers and his employees. His basic Tennant was, if you come to a decision the disrespects any party involved, it is unacceptable. The right thing to do is the right thing to do. Period. Even if it hurts you or makes you look bad at the time. We all make mistakes, move on.

Employees got profit sharing, bonuses, vacation, holiday pay, Christmas bonus, sick days, personal days, stock purchase and matching dollars, minimum raises per year and merit raises. If you went above expectations, you could get a good job pin. 4 of them got you a share of stock. All full time got them a part time still got most of them. And about the only time they hired part time was high school kids or those that wanted only part time. Most of that is gone now and 95% of new hires are part time so they don't have to pay benefits. Thanks in part to stuff Walmart themselves helped get put into Obamacare.

Whether you agree with the younger generations doing this or not, you gotta admit that it's going to force companies to change how they treat employees if they want this behavior to stop.

    LOL.

I worked at a company that had a guy clean out his desk in the middle of the night. I am not sure he ever got another job in the industry. We did not have to bad mouth him, just tell the truth about his exit.

So I disagree companies need to take action, employees will when they see how hard it is to get a decent job. Now if you are quitting some min wage job, sure you may be able to get away with it.

I've always understood the 2 week notice to allow for your company to find a replacement and you help train that person. While I've always understood it to be that way - I've never actually seen it in action. In fact, the company I'm working for now won't even open the job position until the person currently in it has left the company. I've also watched a couple hundred people be fired or convinced to resign on the spot since I've taken a management position here. Not once has anyone ever been given a 2 week heads up of being fired, and a few times they've had the police on stand by just in case a scene should come up.

I completely agree with people who just up and quit. First off, why not - we just up and fire them. Secondly, it helps us start the process of finding a replacement sooner.

With all that said, I absolutely take steps within my department to show my employees they're appreciated as do a few other departments I know of. I just can't say the same for all departments, and those seem to be the ones with people quitting on the spot. I tell the guys in my department that if they ever want to grow by moving on, they can put me down as a reference. So far, nobody has wanted to leave.

Respect from one side may not foster respect from the other, but disrespect will almost always foster disrespect.
Believe it or not, I have known those that intensely did not like, but had huge respect for.
These days, too many people have no idea what the word even means.

You aught to have seen the soviet level propaganda they showed new hires staring ol Sam himself. They sure liked to preach about his way of doing things, but they sure as hell didn't follow his example. I worked for Wally World for three months. That's all I could take as it was honestly one of the worst experiences of my life. Management didn't care, your coworkers didn't care, the customers were entitled and treated you like shit on a daily basis, and you had your hands tied behind your back more often than not, to the point that it inhibited your ability to do your job right. It was not uncommon for managers to just toss you into a new department for a day with zero training or instruction.

That's the only job I have ever wanted to just walk out of during a shift. I still gave them my 2 weeks, even know they didn't deserve it in the least.

In our litigious society, I’ve found that companies are reluctant to provide anything more than dates and salaries when calling for references.

My company had this as a rule, and it was a terminate-able offense if not followed.

    But then I realized something:
Employers gush about good employees. And only give dates/salary for poor employees.
Something to consider if you’re screening applicants

We did not even give out salaries, what a lawsuit disaster that would be. In fact, we outsourced reference checks so no actual employee provided the employment dates or had any other knowledge.

I have been laid off from a job I was at for a little over 13 years. Many of us knew it was coming and my management kept me out of the crosshairs for several rounds of layoffs before the one that got me. I knew others had gotten severance and was pretty confident I would as well. 12 weeks of full pay was nice and I was still able to file for unemployment. HR had even hinted to me that I could still file. Unemployment was not much, but helped until I found comparable employment. I was sad to leave, but liked that they took care of me financially. They called me about a week later with a potential offer for me to come back to work there. They called me back shortly after and said nevermind. Hiring freeze.

Went to work at a similar though smaller company and was there for almost two years. They forced me to perform in a different job description than I was in at the time for an undetermined amount of time. Mislead me into believing I would only have to do this different job for two to three weeks. This different role had me driving 100~ miles each day rather than around 20 miles per day. It was a big change and was a major burden on my wife. They did eventually cover my additional mileage and tolls. Toll roads were the most efficient route to and from. I do not usually take them. They did not cover my overtime as I was salary. I did the job for probably six weeks before giving them an ultimatum that I needed them to get them back to my regular role, as promised. I put in my two weeks notice with the caveat that I would stay should they provide an exit plan back to my role. They decided instead to let me go two days into my two week notice. I was completely prepared to fulfill the role they had me in throughout the two weeks. I had no intention of doing anything malicious.

I am now at another similar company making more money. The second company is a good example of how not to treat employees. They asked me to help them and then took advantage of me. They made it seem like an option and then made it clear it was not an option. They promised it would be short term and that I would be training my replacement after the first week. They were waiting to hear back from the company I was working for them at to see if they were going to extend their contract. They decided to leave me there indefinitely until they heard back.

In case it is not obvious, I am probably still bitter about it. I liked it there and it was a really short commute. I am a project manager in the commercial audio visual field.

Are you one of those guys in the white van with a deal too good to pass up? You know, the warehouse sent an extra system out with the job and you can’t send it back so you’re just trying to sell it for cash. A cheap Chinese knock off of a ”real high dollar” system.

I’ve had guys that I’d turn loose the day they gave notice, and some that could finish out the time. And sometimes I gave them to option to hang around or take off if they wanted. They’d offered notice and it wouldn’t be held against them.

There are a lot of employees who will give 2 weeks, no longer care about the job, and do nothing but waste time while collecting a paycheck and that’s probably got a lot to do with the why many companies just cut loose employees when they give notice.

In my experience, most younger employees are mediocre at best. They don’t care about the job or the guys they work with. I have far more loyalty to my crew and the other crew that covers our area than to the company. To the company I’m a number. If I walk tomorrow they will pile my work load on to someone else until things are sorted out, regardless of how long it takes. I’d give my 2 weeks if for no other reason than not to screw over the guys doing the same as me. Trying to make a living and still have a little time with their families.

Loyalty certainly goes both ways. The age of pensions is over and it shows.

I've been fortunate to work for some excellent companies but my loyalty was to my team and immediate supervisor. I had one job I gave a month's notice to because I knew the handoff with me leaving would be painful. They were grateful for every second.

I do know though if you leave and they find out it's for one of their competitors, they immediately shut your network access off.

I work in health care. The place I work use to be privately owned. If you didn't have at least a few years experience you probably were not getting hired. They paid higher than the local market too. A number of years ago they were bought by a national conglomerate. The pay scale for new hires was decreased and now we have more new graduates and contract people than experienced staff. They seem to be happy with just having bodies to fill the spots.

Some people have ghosted. Some people get ghosted. There have been a few days where I have thought about doing the former. But that would not be my preference.

The end of 2017. I will never work retail again, especially at Wal-Mart.
Yup. It was pretty bad then. Worse now. Explains why I retired last July.
I had reached a point that I could no longer "ride for the brand". When they suggested that I should be happy to use my personal phone for their benefit, it was time to go.

I've worked in the same field for 34 years next month and have seen people ghost companies back to the 80s. Rule 1 is to never burn your bridges. I've worked in the DFW area for all those years and every place I've worked as an employee or contractor I've oddly enough worked there the same time as one specific person plus at one point she was my boss. As a 22yo college hire my first customer was in Lubbock then years later, I ran into him as my customer in another DFW company around 2001. These have all been large companies and everyone's experience will be different.

Texas is a right to work state so as I joke with my boss, he could fire me for being ugly. Yes, no company is loyal to employees since the 70s. Frequently they'll have you exit the building when you give 2 weeks but it's usually with pay so count that paid vacation as a perk.

I will say when reviewing resumes for a job, I won't even interview someone who has 10 employers over the past 10 years. It's a large investment to train a seasoned employee which includes their learning curve for our systems.

I worked 42 years in the same field for only 2 companies. I always felt that if i worked had and did more than the other guy I would be rewarded. Way early in career I was promoted over another guy. He was pissed and told me so. The difference was I did 50 hours of work he did his 35 required to get a paycheck and I told him so. He never did get it. Over the years this mantra has worked out well for me. I expect to get rewarded for the extra effort, not rewarded for doing the job minimum. In my opinion the people whining about these things are generally the job minimum folks for the most part. True there are bad companies and there is no need to stay with them. But hard work usually pays off in the end.

No, but it is funny that I drove the company van home from work tonight. I am usually in my own car or motorcycle. Sometimes, I use a company van to run from the office to a jobsite if there is one available.
