The only time I've ever OC'ed it was an accident.

I was wearing a suit one day w/ my pistol IWB & shirt tucked. I took the jacket off in the car. First stop was the bank. I'm used to the feel of a pistol on my belt so I just didn't think about it being visible w/ the jacket off.

Went in, felt the gun, & realized what I had done. I did my business & left no problem. Maybe one other person in there besides employees. The bank has 30.07 but not 30.06.

No one cared or, I imagine, even saw the gun. They probably know me well enough if they did see it to not worry.
I can identify with this. You get so used to the pistol on the hip...

Actually did that BEFORE OC was legalized several years back....on a jobsite and needed some parts, ran into a hardware store in Uvalde. Cool morning that had warmed up, so I had taken my jacket off. Local deputy was in the store as well.....he looked at me, glanced down at my waist with a little grin and obviously turned to "look at something of interest". When he finally turned back around, the shirt was over the gun. He just nodded and said "beautiful day, isn't it?"

That's called common sense law enforcement. Kind of a rarity these days.

I think that because I'm older, well-dressed, & extremely polite many mistake me for an L E O." -- leVieux

Well, I often look like a transient, but at least I'm polite. I don't know what the casual observer thinks I am at first glance...except on one occasion in a Starbucks in Albuquerque: The people at a nearby table asked me if I was "Homeland Security." I don't know how they came up with that. ;-)

Next time someone asks, just say "I believe some chit is about to go down. I would leave if I was you."

On occasion, I've seen guys OC at Krogers and this is in Houston, north of downtown. I didnt see any concern from anyone. And in most of these instances, full OC with OWB hip carry. Minimally 4 different times and 4 different men.

Havent noticed anywhere else except where you expect, near ranges in parking lots.

I've slept with mine in an iwb holster before. But I've got a nice memory foam mattress and lots of numb spots from all the surgery.

I was a bit fluffier then too. Lol. I found that a bit of fat in the right spots is a great aid in concealing firearms. I have to be a bit more diligent at 220 lbs than I was at 350lbs. I cant ccw a bofors anymore.

Another point, some of the OC'ers I've seen in both states have done dangerous things, like sitting back towards entrance door in a busy restaurant, obvious GLOCK in non-retention Fobus OWB. While CC'ing in Houston stores, I have twice felt a hand on my main belt weapon. The rig was completely non-visible to others. Once, I turned quickly, suppressing a slap/swat, only to see a little old 80-ish Lady looking bewildered. I have no idea what she thought she was doing with her hand on my hip & belt. I was so glad I hadn't reflexively hit her; would have been very difficult to explain. But I did really have "second thoughts" later. My training was to turn and slap. leVieux

If you're carrying fully open, i.e. fully visible, no attempts to even slightly conceal the piece with an untucked shirt, you absolutely should use a high grade retention holster like the ones made by IMI. To draw the pistol, you need to push the button and give it a good yank. No way granny or LaSharone can get it out of the holster without you noticing and preventing it:

Agree with above. I rarely do (almost never) actually O.C.

The incidents I described were in Houston Grocery Markets, G26 IWB GALCO, fully covered by long outer shirt, no "printing". IOW, I don't think the Lady had any idea I was carrying.

I fear O.C. in Texas b/c so many don't understand the actual Laws, including some LEO's.

Here I can call my ATF Agent Detective Son to correct any mistaken LEO where I now live.

I would like to O.C. my Python around my wife's small town farm & ranch area "hometown" where I do hunt frequently. The only problem I see there would be HEB and the many merchants who misunderstand the current signage laws.

I opened carry into Walmart on day one........

No one noticed.....no one went screaming down the aisles......

    I was so disappointed...........

We have quite a few folks who open carry here.....

If one calmly talks to the store "managers" who authorize those signs, one will find that they have zero idea of what the signs really mean and/or whom will be affected by them. However, even when the particulars are explained, they still usually refuse to take the signs down. Recall that, in Texas, over-zealous pro 2A armed demonstrators actually aggravated the troubles we now see. Causing unnecessary fear & confusion in the general public will never further our cause.

(CC, as I know most people will NEVER OC, it take a "special" person to do it -- most people aren't up to it).
Just how "special" of a person does one have to be in order to be up to carrying openly? This is not a rhetorical question, I really would appreciate an answer because I simply do not at all understand why someone has to be "special" to open carry and how most people (at least gun owners who carry regularly) would not be "up to it".

I rarely carry IWB, so open carry depends on the season and signage. Although I don't look for everyone's reaction to open carry, I can't say I've seen any negative reactions in the Midland/ Odessa area. I have had a number of people compliment my gun, but other than that, it's a non issue really. I'm not going to say I've seen a lot of people open carry, but I have seen several around here. I don't think of myself as special.

I heard a guy say once that open carry just required "gonads"! :green: I think it was in reference to dealing with the "non-gun" idiots!
