    I’ve got a ton of unused/unwrapped mags.

    Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I don’t trust any of them until I put lots of rounds thru them to verify functionality.

    The only loaded mags I use, have all been tested by me.

    Any of you guys the same?

    I do try to fire from each mag, but I have not yet made it through all of them. Would be a tad expensive in ammo cost, so I do a goodly number and then the rest get cycled in over time.

    I’ve got about 1,000 rounds of 45 hollow points, and only a single gun that uses them. And that gun is just sitting in my safe.

    Happy to ship some to you if you want

    Be happy to swap you some other ammo for some of those.
    I am certain we can find an agreement.

    When I read "prepper" info, I see folks preparing for the most unlikely events, ever.

    Please consider what the most likely problems may be, then try to be ready for those.

    Being elders and living in the country, we fear the violent home invasions which claimed the life of an old friend and are increasing in frequency.

    We have extensive defenses against home invaders.

    But, our LEO son tells that these criminals now use "Police, Open-Up" as their first notice.

    Blame on that falls squarely on modern police tactics and procedures.

    So much wisdom in this one statement. And this is a topic I thought a lot about around the Y2k prepper buildup. What you "need" can vary widely based on the disaster you are preparing for and some steps will be almost useless if you pick the wrong approach.
    Here are just a few possible scenarios. Pick one and prepare, based on how you THINK it might turn out:

    * Massive asteroid strike on Earth
    * Yellowstone Caldera explodes
    * Foreign EMP attack (candles and old school electronics popular, gensets, solar panels, inverters, if they are hardened...)
    * General disruption to food distribution sources <NOTE: You are HERE> (buy lots of non-perishable foods and ammo to keep it)
    * Global Thermonuclear war (buy a missile silo or GTFO)
    * Red Dawn
    * Massive Solar Flares

    And I didn't even include the Mayan Calendar warning and quite a few others.
    Go on, get busy.

    Lots of interesting posts here but to get back on topic....a decade or so ago I had the same revelation as the original poster. I could not get or afford enough ammo so I turned to reloading.

    I buy components by the 1000’s when money allows, and store powder and primers in ammo boxes in a climate controlled area. With a progressive reloading press (Dillon 550) it is easy to make 300 rounds of 9mm in an hour so a few thousand rounds of custom made ammo (my choice of bullet, bullet speed etc.) is cheap and easy. I have worked up loads that work best in my guns and in different circumstances like target shooting, plinking, or hunting.

    I load for almost all the calibers I own. Have not bought factory rounds in well over 7 years and can resupply any caliber in a few hours at the reloading bench from my component inventory. Just shot some 38 special I made in 2013 and it worked flawlessly.

    A large scale EMP attack would be devastating. That would truly be a "hits the fan" scenario.
