Some birds like to take "dirt baths." I've watched wrens take dirt baths before, especially when water is scarce. Maybe that's what those ground nests are in your backyard?

    perhaps....

ofcourse they are doing it right where im planning my fall garden.

Wow, Iraq hasn't been nearly this hot. This time last year when I would wake up it would be about 110 at 0900, this year it is in the high 80's low 90's at 0900. We have been topping out at around 115-120 where last year it was 130-135 every day....

LoL...outside temp looks similar to mine, but inside? Forget that....76 is about the highest I let it get and it 68 for sleeping. :)

Hottest night I ever slept was at Furnace Creek in Death Valley a few years ago. 11 P.M. at night and the air temp was 92 degrees. Dropped down to 88 by 2 A.M. but DAMN was that an uncomfortable night sleep!

It is so dry and hot in North Texas.... a friend said that he went fishing at Lake Dallas and caught a 20 lb. catfish that had ticks.

I've been sitting in rush hour at a stop light in 122 degrees no AC. Probably 150 in the car.

That was a long summer in AZ. The airports shut down.

I've ran work crews under the gun in 120 degree heat. Shotgun so hot you couldn't pick it up if you had to use it. I prefer light wood stock for that reason. I need to find some for my 590.

I muzzle punched a guy with my shotgun and it was so hot it actually partially branded his forehead after the wound healed. He had a crescent shaped scar above his nose.

He learned not to try the noob after that. My first day and he was seeing how close he could get. Stupid. I saved his life I guess. The overwatch gunner was safety off finger on the trigger, I did let him get too close I guess, so close i had to create space to shoulder the weapon. He also got his ars beat cause when i did hit him and racked the shotgun, the rest of the crew hit the ground in a bunch of cholla cactus. They weren't too happy. He got branded. Lost a good job and got his ars beat. Bad day all around.

    It’s been so hot …
    It’s been so hot and so dry … | SciGuy | a Chron.com blog
    • That June was the warmest on record in Houston.
    • The month finished with an average temperature of 86.15 degrees, besting a mark set in 1906.
    • The Junes of 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 all rank among the 10 warmest Junes on record.
    • April, May and June of 2011 all rank among the 10 warmest on record in Houston.
    • Houston had seven 100-degree days in June. On average it gets four per decade.
    • August is the city’s warmest month. This June would tied for the eighth warmest August of all time.
    • It’s been so dry…
    • Nearly three-quarters of Texas now falls into an “exceptional” drought, the worst category.
    • The driest nine-month stretch in Texas history ran from June of 1917 through February 1918 (average 9.36 inches)
    • Since Oct. 1, forecasters estimate Texas has had about 8.5 inches of rain.
    • Houston has had 7.9 inches of rain this year. It normally has about 25 inches by now.

If the combined July-September precipitation for Texas is 5 inches or so, we’ll equal our driest 12 months ever, set from October 1955 to September 1956. Because of the previous years of drought in the 1950s, the current drought still wouldn’t be as bad as then. That’s from a meteorological point of view; impact severity may be different.

This year in North Texas we are 7” over normal with rain in the forecast.Lakes have to be full even with the flood gates open. Not a problem if we could get out.
