I've got a couple of STI pistols, and they were great for the price. I bought my son a Spartan for his college graduation, and it was a terrific pistol as well. Parts of it were made in the Philippines, but fitted at STI. Put one side-by-side with a Rock Island and you could quickly tell the difference.

For whatever reason, STI refused to consider their customer base. They want to define what that base is supposed to be. In past years, a couple of ranges near here had "STI Day" events. You could hear customers one after the other complaining to the reps about the sights that come on their pistols and how hard it was to order parts. They'd nod and point out that Dawson did a lot of work on their pistols. Customers would often ask if they used crappy sights as a way to force people to go to Dawson. None of those ranges carry STI products today, and they will tell you quietly that it was 100% because of the factory sales reps. They just couldn't work with them at all. STI wanted to be known for competition guns and everyone else could go to hell.

When the name change came out, I looked at their web site. All 9mm. Heresy for any real 1911 aficionado. They seem to be trying to find a niche that nobody else wants so they don't have to compete.

Sad. Is it my imagination, or do I hear someone quietly playing "Taps" in the distance?

That's a great idea. As soon as my answering machine and 8-track businesses take off I'll move on to 1911s.

    :pounce:
You'll need some packs of matches to go with those 8-tracks. As I recall, you had to have a pack or two to stuff under the cassette to keep it from double tracking. Worst. Music. Technology. Ever.

I've had the STI Lawman for about 15 years. It's about the most tastefully beautiful 1911 that I've seen ….. ever! It's a single stack 1911 and it shoots like a dream. It was made 100% in Georgetown, Texas.

Long ago, the slide stop spring tube shook loose and it just wiggled a bit. I sent it back to STI and got a taste of their excellent customer service. They fixed the spring tube and I mentioned that I preferred an adjustable rear sight instead of their fixed tactical sight. They replaced my rear sight with their newly designed adjustable sight...….. for free!

Everything about STI was first class!

Redneck you remind me of a guy I knew years ago. I don't know what you paid for the WC Colt but. He ran a gun shop. Always looking for a BARGAIN one day an elderly woman came in and said she had a gun she wanted to sell. She drug out an Artillery Model Luger with the stock and an original holster. It was pristine. All numbers matched. She said it was a war souvenir of her deceased husbands. He tactfully explained it was a old gun and not really popular and said it really wasn't worth much and offered her $75. And she took it and left happy. At the time it was worth over a grand, try today. I asked him how he could sleep at night.

Redneck I've seen enough of your deals to know you treat people right. It just reminded me is all.

Thanks - I've found that I can hunt around and find what I want at a fair price. I don't offer checks - I offer cash on the spot. I'll often tell the seller that it's worth "X", but I have what I have, if it works for 'em, fine - if not, no hard feelings. I make a LOT of offers, with only a few takers - but that's what it takes.....lol Thing is, a 1911 that enters my door STAYS here - and that's what a LOT of the folks I deal with really want - that it's going to a good home that will respect its' heritage. I've got 1911's that I've had 30-40 years that I held on to even through tough times.

I've seen some of TexasRedneck's 1911 collection in person, and it's impressive. What younger readers should remember is that he didn't run out and buy 800 pistols (or whatever he actually has). This is something he built over a period of years. Build up your gun fund and watch for opportunities. They do happen. And don't be afraid to make an offer - a reasonable offer - on something you like. You might be surprised.

As for TR, he has to live with the fear that one day he'll kick the bucket and his wife will sell his guns for what he TOLD her he paid!!

Just joking, but I guarantee more than one reader thought, "Uh-oh...", about his own situation.

LOL! Actually, she's often been with me - especially the night I got the one below. Friend asked how high I was prepared to bid on it, and I (truthfully) told him that I had $10k in cash w/me, and a $20k LOC I could draft on if needed - with the better half standing next to me. Some guns just draw you - and they made 50 of this puppy......

Otherwise, I have a spreadsheet w/values and she knows who to contact to sell any she might need to. Hopefully, that won't be necessary and the collection can be passed down to the kids. As to the current count, somewhere north of 80 last time I counted. :)

    Super simple.

Nobody wants single stack 1911s anymore.

Nobody under age 89 carries 45acp anymore.

A lot of people are tired of same plastic shit with different name.

2011 is the evolution of 1911.

It can be lightweight and compact but not 7 rounds, infact 15-16 rounds. It can shoot like a 1911; precise and fast. Yet feel goos in hand.

STI discovered that market was booming and switched their line up to 2011s. They still offer a couple single stacks and comp guns of course.

You gotta be happy about them transforming and spreading the Lone Star and American flag on their guns instead of worrying about outdated 1911s. Plenty out there still making badass 1911s for boomers.

I saw some STI 1911 style pistols at Guns Plus in Georgetown yesterday. Just kinda glanced at them, but I think I say $2300 on one of the tags. Might have been $3200. Either way...too rich for my blood.
