He is now due to his own actions. He'd never have the support of the leftists saying he's not doing enough, so he can just disregard them. His base is much more individual liberty and property/business rights minded.

He could have still declared a state of emergency, issued guidelines, but took no coercive action. If he felt strongly enough about the guidelines he could have lead by example and ordered all the organizations directly under the governor to follow them, but not interfere with citizens. ...or he could have done nothing like a few other states. I'm sure there's other winning positions I can't think of as well.

IMHO Abbott is looking forward to a potential run at the Presidency. This puts him in the position of taking every opportunity to build a base of support wider than just Texas. The national media criticism of his leadership on the Covid issue is hurting his chances so, no matter what Texas thinks, he needs to position himself as a leader that sees the bigger picture and can be accepted by all of America.

Of course, this is not what we elected him to do, but he cannot afford to be myopic and focus on today because politicians are all about where they will be tomorrow.

I just wish he would take the pulse of the people and see what Texas citizens want, not the media or the experts. The way it is now, he is acting in isolation telling us instead of asking us.

Had he done the one thing that he is mandated to do by the Texas Constitution, call a special session of the Legislature to address the crisis, he would be on stable ground. Yet, he decides to play banana-republic dictator for nearly four months and issue illegal executive orders with only his political allies and campaign donors as advisers. As far as I'm concerned, he beats out the Fergusons as the most corrupt governor of Texas....

He could have fallen back on the State and Federal Constitutions but instead chose not to.
That put hin in a lose-lose situation.
