This was a new one on me, never heard of it.

"There is a folklore superstition regarding the giving of a knife as a gift. If the knife is given to a friend, money must be exchanged as well. It is considered very bad luck to give someone a knife without exchanging money or the friendship will be cut by the knife. Because of this superstition, it is common that the gift of a knife will be given along with a penny, nickel or dime in the box with the knife so that the recipient can give back the coin, thereby saving the friendship from being severed by the giving of the sharp blade. The exact background of this superstition is unclear yet; even today most people will include a coin with the gift of a knife and request the coin be given back. The apparent view is that it is far better to be safe than sorry."

Do you know of any odd superstitions?

If all the cows are lying down, the fish aren't biting.

It's good luck to eat salt pork and black eyed peas on New Years Day

Good to know. Been gifting knives and didn’t know about this. No broken friendships so far.

Next time, I’ll put a coin.

    Here’s one:

Design elements in a house should not end in multiple of three. Oro-Plata-Mata translated to Gold-Silver-Death. Steps/stairs in particular.

Home Entrance door should not be facing the Exit door. It’s considered bad luck.

I don’t believe in superstitions but I observe “Pascal’s wager”.

    Gunz are icky.
Never heard of the money/knife thing before.
Have heard the open knife goes back open thing.
Wife's family does the black eyed peas and cornbread thing on New Years.
One "3" thing I'd long heard of was never be the third person to light a cigarette off of a match. Very bad luck for the third person. Always seemed kinda silly to me.
Later I learned this came out of WW1 lore.
At night on the front soldiers would strike matches to light up a smoke. Snipers would see the flame and aim in on it.
The first and second person would be done by the time the sniper zeroed in.
When the third person stuck their face to the match flame to puff up BOOM! Dead third person.

I agree with oldag -- do you know of any superstitions that aren't odd?

In parts of Indonesia, they believe it's bad luck to sweep at night.

In Germany, they say never to light a cigarette from a candle, and Germany is the first place where I heard it's bad luck to give a knife as a gift.

In some parts of Peru and Brazil, they believe you should never look at the pink river dolphins directly in the eye, or you'll have bad dreams for the rest of your life.

In America, liberals believe they can make you safer by taking away your guns and the police. I'm telling you, this whole planet is filled with crazy people.
