Got our Ike insurance payment today, only three days after we got power back! I called our insurance company the nanosecond the wind stopped blowing cuz I figured I better get in queue. They had an adjuster out here within a few days.

I'd guesstimated about 18-20K in damage to our house and insurance company payment seems to be in line with that, less deductible. I also need to figure out if they depreciated anything. They even gave us a few bucks for the food we had to throw out from the fridge and freezer.

When I told my wife that instead of the new roof it would be a much better investment to get some NFA goodies like an Uzi and a few supressors, she gave me 'The Look'. I suggested that instead of a can for the .223 and .308 or wasting the money on a new roof (it's been leaking for so long, what's a few more years?) that perhaps we should take the Greek cruise she's been dreaming about. On that one she actually gave it about two seconds of thought before she again gave me 'The Look'.

We haven't yet received the bill for reinstalling our AC unit after the tree took it out, nor do we have a bid from a roofing company, so it remains to be seen if our settlement was fair. Insurance companies and fair treatment rarely seem to be congruent. But to their credit they were very quick to respond.

Up to 5,000.00 for the A/C, and 5,000 for the roof approximately. Stock up food and water ammo. Wait for gold to dip and get some. I'd keep the rest in a darn safe. If you worry about thieves, don't take it to the bank.

Ira, do you think the insurance company will cut you another check if you prove that the repair costs really were higher? My car insurance works that way. Good Luck!

They did tell me that if I document higher costs they will cover it. They also told me if I get it fixed for less than the preliminary settlement that I'll owe them money back. So long as it's balanced, I find it fair. I don't expect them to reimburse for money I didn't have to spend.

My adjuster just left, should find out how much in a few days. Never heard of the paying it back, if I do the work, does my time not count as much as the guys who get paid?
